“Polka Dot Begonia” is such a fitting nickname for these honestly, but their full botanical name is Begonia maculata ‘Wightii’.

The “Begonia maculata” part is the species, while “Wightii” is the cultivar; basically a cultivated version selected for certain traits like leaf shape, spotting, or growth habit. That’s why not every “Polka Dot Begonia” looks exactly the same.

Common names make plants easier to recognize and share with people, but botanical names help tell them apart when there are multiple cultivars involved.

It’s kind of like seeing a Bulbasaur and just calling it a “grass type Pokémon.” Like… yeah, technically correct, but that could also mean Chikorita, Oddish, Bellsprout, or 47 other leafy little weirdos.

Weeks of scraping, scrubbing, sweeping and mopping this floor. 😮‍💨My hands are bruised, back is shot, and I’m pretty sure I’ve developed mesothelioma😷 from scraping up this decades old adhesive. But, I’m seeing progress.

Plant sorting day over here 🌿

I’m going through the greenhouse/jungle and posting some starter plants in the comments throughout the day if anybody local is looking for affordable plant babies 💚

Hoyas, philos, tetrasperma, coleus, succulents, and a few weirdos 👀

Prices and photos will be in the comments as I get everything cleaned up and organized.

Almost every plant in photo is for sale, dm if you have any questions

A local couple surprised me this week by gifting me this gorgeous 15 year old Norfolk Island Pine and I am OBSESSED. 🌲💚

I haven’t even fully processed the fact that someone trusted me with a tree older than some TikTok users.

One of the coolest things about plants is that they outlive trends, move between homes, and quietly become part of people’s lives for years. I’m really grateful this one found its way here.🫶

Scraping away the old adhesive and cleaning back the original tile underneath. Even though this floor will eventually be painted and refreshed, I like starting with a clean base and seeing what’s really underneath first.

It feels a lot like plant rehab—removing what’s no longer serving, stabilizing what’s still strong, and giving something old a chance to be useful again in a new way. Just doing it on a slightly larger scale this time.

Which of your “indoor” plants (if any) do you notice enjoy the outside during mild weather?

Some plants I’ve noticed that are enjoying the shaded areas of outdoors lately are my Snake Plant, Rubber Tree, mature Hoyas, Coleus, and succulents like Dragonfruit Cactus, Curly Cactus and String of Bananas.

I let these guys hang out as long as the weather is nice and I routinely treat these with Captain Jacks deadbug spray to make sure they don’t get pests.

Experimenting with mounting displays. This dischidia ovata was the perfect candidate to try the new setup out.

Would custom mounted plants be something anyone would be interested in seeing me offer through The Mossy Nook? 👀

Phase 2 🌿 New-Plant Protocol for The Nook

Old setup: dense mix + self-watering pot = moisture overload waiting to happen.
New setup: chunky aroid mix (bark, perlite, coco coir, worm castings) + a little of the original mix to ease the transition.

Same size clear pot for root visibility, added a moss pole for support, dropped into a ceramic outer pot for stability.

✨Pro tip: don’t water right after repotting—slightly damp mix is enough. Water the next day to avoid root rot.

Less soggy, more breathable. Now we’re talking.
