⚡ STORM SEASON PSA: Essential home electrical and HVAC safety during a power outage
With heavy rain and high winds heading toward Cornelius and the Tualatin Valley, storm season is officially here. At Best Owner Direct, we want to make sure your home, electronics, and heating/cooling systems stay safe if the lights go out.
Here is what to do to protect your home before, during, and after a power outage:
Turn off major appliances and HVAC at the thermostat. When utility power is restored, it often comes with a sudden electrical surge. Switching off your heating/cooling system, stove, and major equipment prevents that voltage spike from frying delicate circuit boards or tripping breakers.
Unplug sensitive electronics. Unplug TVs, computers, and valuable devices directly from the wall to protect them from grid fluctuations.
Leave one light switch turned ON. Keep a single light switched on so you will immediately know when power has been successfully restored.
Wait 10 to 15 minutes before turning things back on. Resist the urge to flip everything back on the moment the power returns. Let the grid stabilize first, then turn appliances and your HVAC system back on one by one.
Stay far away from downed power lines. Never approach fallen lines or anything touching them. Always assume downed lines are live and energized, and report them immediately to the power company or emergency services.
Never run portable generators indoors. Keep gas generators at least 20 feet away from windows, doors, and attached garages to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
