Your doors might be stealing 9 square feet from every room in your house. 😱

Standard swinging doors carve out an arc of floor space you literally cannot use. Furniture won't fit there. Traffic patterns avoid it. The room shrinks every time the door opens.

Hotels figured this out decades ago. Pocket doors slide into the wall, recover the 9 square feet, and let you actually use every inch of the room. One of the smartest small-room moves in design and most homeowners never even consider it.

Headboards make or break a bedroom, and most homes get this wrong.
Either skipped entirely or scaled way too small, headboards are one of the biggest unforced errors in bedroom design.
🚨 Want me to look at your space on a FREE Saturday? Everything is at lisaholt.com.
Hotels know what most homeowners don't: scale and height carry the whole room. Without the right headboard, the bed reads as unfinished no matter how nice the bedding is.

Walk through any well-designed hotel lobby and you'll notice something most people miss. Every sofa is styled from every angle. Not just where someone is going to sit. Every side that can be seen has been thought about.
At home, most sofas are styled from exactly one direction. The front gets all the attention, with the pillows and throws carefully arranged. The back gets ignored. And if the back of the sofa can be seen from anywhere else in the room, from the kitchen, the entry, or the dining area, that undressed back is what's making the whole space look half-finished.
🚨 If you want my eyes on your actual space, I host a FREE live design session on Zoom the first Saturday of every month. Bring photos of the room that's bugging you and I'll tell you exactly what I'd change. No cost and no pitch.

The fix is small. Drape a throw casually over the back. Lean a pillow into it from behind. Place a console table with a lamp and a piece of art behind it. Anything that signals this side was thought about too.
The only time you can skip it is when the back of the sofa is already upholstered in a statement fabric. If the back is its own design moment, the fabric is doing the work for you. You can leave it alone.
The full breakdown is in this Short. If you've never thought about the back of your sofa as a design surface, you're not alone. You can fix it in about thirty seconds.

There's a moment when you slide into hotel sheets and they feel different. Cooler and smoother, and somehow more substantial than what's on your bed at home. Most people assume it's the thread count, or some luxury fabric you can't get without a hospitality account.
It's not. It's the process. 🚨 If you want my eyes on your actual space, I host a FREE live design session on Zoom the first Saturday of every month. Bring photos No cost and no pitch.

Hotels treat sheets very differently from the moment they come off the bed to the moment they go back on. Every step is intentional, and there's one specific step almost nobody does at home that changes everything. Skip it and your sheets feel bunched and rumpled no matter how nice they are. Do it once and you'll feel the difference that night.

The full sequence is in this clip. It costs nothing and it doesn't take longer than your current laundry routine.

There's a moment every evening when a room stops working. The sun drops, someone flicks on the overhead light, and the space suddenly feels flat and a little harsh. Most people blame the room. It's almost never the room.

Hotels figured this out long ago. Walk into a well-designed hotel room at night and you won't find one bright ceiling light doing all the work. Instead there are small, warm pools of light at different heights. That layering is what makes a room feel calm and quietly expensive.
At home, that's usually the layer that got skipped. Accent lighting feels optional, so it never gets bought, and then the room feels unfinished and nobody can say why.
The fix is simple. Stop asking one light to do everything. Add a few small sources at different heights and put them on dimmers. It costs very little and it changes how a room feels at night.

Ever wonder why hotel beds look so much better than yours? It's not the thread count. It's not the brand. It's that they use a duvet one size bigger than the mattress.

That's it. A queen bed gets a king duvet. The extra width drapes over the sides instead of pulling tight to the edges. Suddenly the bed looks layered, luxurious, and finished β€” instead of shrink-wrapped.

This is the kind of thing you learn when you've spent decades designing hotel rooms where the bed has to sell the entire experience the second a guest walks in. It costs almost nothing and it changes how your entire bedroom feels.

Small Hotel Rooms Don't Have Closets. And That's the Point. 🏨

Think about the last great hotel room you stayed in. It was probably tiny. And it probably didn't have a closet. But it didn't feel like it was missing one, did it?
🎨Free monthly design review on Zoom, first Saturday of every month πŸ‘‰ lisaholt.com

That's not an accident. The best boutique hotels replace closets with alternatives that take up less space, look better, and actually work harder β€” open storage systems, wall-mounted rails, built-in niches, floating shelves. They treat storage as part of the room's design instead of hiding it behind a door that eats three feet of floor space.

If you're working with a small bedroom, a guest room, or any space where a traditional closet is eating more than it's earning β€” this is worth seeing.

I spent decades designing and operating award-winning boutique hotels β€” one sold for nearly a million dollars per key, two were named to the world's best hotels list. When every square foot costs that much, you learn very quickly what earns its place and what doesn't.

Walk into most living rooms with high ceilings and look up. What do you see? Nothing. Blank walls. Empty air. All the furniture, all the art, all the effort β€” sitting at eye level and below. The room has ten feet of vertical space and you're using five of it.
🚨Join me the first Saturday of every month for a free live design review on Zoom. Bring photos of your own space and I'll tell you exactly what I'd do πŸ‘‰ lisaholt.com

Hotels don't do this. They design vertically β€” tall art, layered lighting at multiple heights, shelving that draws the eye upward, curtains that run floor to ceiling. That's not decorating. That's engineering how a space feels when you walk into it, and it's one of the cheapest shifts you can make in your own home.

Walk into your room right now and look around. How many different textures can you actually feel? If more than two or three of them are the same β€” smooth walls, smooth furniture, smooth bedding, smooth floor β€” that's probably why the room feels lifeless.

Hotels don't make this mistake. They layer linen against wood against stone against velvet against metal. Every surface feels different under your hand. That's not decorating. That's engineering a sensory experience β€” and it's one of the cheapest design upgrades you can steal.

Luxury Hotels Figured Out Bathroom Lighting Decades Ago. Most Homes Are Still Getting It Wrong. πŸ›

Most home bathrooms are lit like a dentist's office. Too bright, too cold, too evenly distributed. You walk in and your face tells you something is wrong before your brain catches up.

Luxury hotels don't make this mistake. They light bathrooms the way they light restaurants β€” layered, warm, intentional, and aimed at the spaces where you actually want to feel good. That's not a budget thing. That's a knowledge thing. And once you see it, you can't unsee it.
