Johnson Seat and Canvas is the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of successful small businesses in Cortland. It’s a Cortland institution and few residents can remember a time when Johnson’s wasn’t there. Second generation owner and life-long Cortland resident, Cherry Potts operates the business that her father, Jerry Johnson, established in 1946. Any business that has been around that long must be successful, so I wanted Cherry’s thoughts about being a business owner in Cortland.

My phone call surprised Cherry, but she was proud to point out that she loves that she has lived in Cortland her whole life. We had a very pleasant conversation relating to how she is doing in light of the pandemic and how business is going for her. I asked if there was anything else that the town can do better for her and her business. I also wanted her view of what she thinks Cortland is doing that works well. Cherry said that she couldn’t think of anything else the town could do for her. This is definitely something Cortland should take pride in.
Johnson Seat and Canvas is an unusual business since the majority of its customers come from out of town. So how can Cortland continue to support a small business like Cherry’s? The first thing is always having town officials who are ready to listen to business owners when they mention problems or concerns. I also think we should examine the importance of maintaining our infrastructure and internet since more and more businesses operate online.
