Here are a few photos that show the development of new seed cones, next to a few fertile cones, almost ready for harvest. Also sharing a fertile seed cone broken apart, releasing the fresh fertile seeds.

The native Chilean parrots love munching on fertile seeds. In the Northwest, the Steller's Jays are quick to harvest seeds from our tree when the cones are ready to break apart. Its always a challenge to get my share of the harvest 😄

The 3 Monkey Puzzle Trees in this short clip were grown from seed. First gown in pots then later transplanted in the ground when they were about 18-24" tall. The Trees are about 9 years old.

Having propagated several thousand Monkey Puzzle Trees from seed we have learned the importance of proper pot drainage, soil structure and moisture content, to avoid the high risk of root rot and root distress. Soggy soil kills roots, completely dried out soil kills roots.

Having propagated several thousand Monkey Puzzle Trees from seeds we have learned the importance of soil content, pot drainage and watering management. Root rot is a very high risk issue, especially true for potted trees. Root rot can be introduced by over watering, poor soil drainage. Another root cause of root rot is allowing the fine roots to completely dry out, killing the roots due to lack of moisture then introducing moisture to a dead or dying root system. Always try to keep the soil moist but not damp.

The bare roots seedlings in the tub were pulled from the what we call the seed house. The seed house has heated propagation beds, soil temperature controlled. The seedlings are then transplanted into modified dixie cups and placed into one of the 4 greenhouses at our nursery that specializes in growing this endangered living conifer tree.

Our male tree transformed into a Monoecious after developing 3 fertile seed cones that yielded 326 fertile seeds harvested August 2025.
