Release Control

When we first noticed a shift in our friendship, we immediately tried to fast forward to the part of the story where we were back on the same page. Rather than looking to God to guide us toward restoration, we tried to control the situation by focusing on what the other person needed to do. When our attempts to control failed, we resorted to taking offense and blaming each other for our inability to reconcile. This was one of our biggest mistakes.

As humans with autonomy and free will, we seemingly have full control over every aspect of our lives. Hard times reveal otherwise - they prove how little is within our control. When we are faced with these challenging moments, our tendency is to grasp for control to help reduce our fear and uncertainty. But in the face of adversity, though it may seem counterintuitive, we are presented with an opportunity to release control. As we loosen our grip and begin to trust God, we can more clearly see Him in the midst of our circumstances.

Scripture tells us God is the potter and we are the clay. This means our role is to yield to the hands of the potter. We don’t have to try to control outcomes or stress about how our lives and relationships will ultimately turn out. In our waiting, we can trust that the end result is being carefully molded in God’s hands. And when He is finished, our lives and relationships will be a reflection of His perfect touch.

If we believe that God is ultimately in control of our lives, then what do we control? We are responsible for our inputs—the daily decisions that dictate where our focus, time, and energy are directed. And we don't have to manage these inputs alone. We can turn to God for guidance, asking Him to help us make better daily decisions.

Today, instead of focusing on the outcome (how your situation ends), consider focusing on your inputs (daily decisions) by reflecting on these questions:

What do you prioritize daily?
How do you spend your free time?
Where do you focus the majority of your energy and effort?
How can you yield to what God is doing in your life this season?
We can influence outcomes but we don’t have the final say, God does. And that truth is the best news for our lives and relationships.

Reflection: What is it that you are trying to control in your own life that you need to release back to God?

Jeremiah 29:11-13 KJV
[11] For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. [12] Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. [13] And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I wi

Be Careful What You Do
REVELATION 20:11-15

Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.
Revelation 20:15

This may be the scariest passage in all of Scripture. The dead, including you and me, will be judged according to what we have done.

What we do matters. Our actions reflect and have an influence on the person we will be. We are either becoming more like the person we are called to be in Christ, or we are following our sinful nature and wandering away from God toward certain destruction. Even if we say we love Christ but our actions show the opposite, we are denying the love of Christ within us. What we do is proof of who we are. As James 2:17 puts it, “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”

A song I learned as a child talks about this: “Oh, be careful little hands what you do./ Oh, be careful little hands what you do./ For the Father up above is looking down in love,/ so be careful little hands what you do.” Other verses remind little mouths to be careful what they say, and little feet to be careful where they go.

God’s record of our words and deeds places great responsibility on us. We need to ask, “Are we acting as obedient, loving believers, or as destructive lawbreakers?”

But because of God’s love in Christ, we need not despair. We can repent of our wrongdoing, ask forgiveness, and be assured that Jesus’ sacrifice pays the debt of all our sin.

O God, you know what we do. You care what we do. Help us always to do what’s right, showing your love and obeying your commands, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Only Love is Enough
Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
Romans 13:10

If we really loved one another, we could forget all the other commandments. For, indeed, love fulfills the law.

Love is a moral principle. A principle covers all the world’s moral activity. There are a few other moral principles, such as be holy, do justice, do no harm, and so on. These principles apply in all times and places. We can never say, “No, I don’t have to love here,” or “I don’t have to do justice there.” In all cases moral principles apply.

When we love someone, we should not need to be reminded not to steal from them, or lie about them, or cheat them. Such reminders are almost impertinent for someone who loves another. Paul says, “Love does no harm to a neighbor.” But doing no harm, or merely observing the law, is not enough. Only the perfect love that Christ showed when he gave his life for ours is sufficient to fulfill the law. Christ removed the curse of lawlessness and has given us everlasting life.

To love as Jesus did means that we incorporate God’s self-sacrificing love into our hearts. In Christ, God showed us not only perfect obedience to the law but perfect love.

And only Christ fully lives out that perfect love. We who live in this hostile world still struggle with desires to make gains for ourselves or to harm others. Since we still live with this tension, we still need the law.

God, forgive us when we harm our neighbor. Help us to truly love you and others, guiding us by your own perfect love shown to us through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Today is a daily devotional that helps God's people refresh, refocus and renew their faith through Bible reading, reflection, and prayer.

James 5:7
Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains.
