**SALE UPDATE**

Good morning, all.

Last week I announced a native plant sale at my house on June 13 & 14. This date was selected based on my son’s currently chemotherapy regimen schedule. He was scheduled to start up this past Monday and hopefully out of the hospital and feeling better by then (chemo makes you quite ill for extended periods). Unfortunately his white blood counts had not rebounded enough from the last session to begin chemo this week, so it’s being pushed back and will begin next week. This means we will most likely still be at hospital with him on the 13th & 14th.

***THE SALE DATE WILL BE MOVED TO JUNE 20 & 21***

This will allow us time to get back and recover and my son to be able to participate/enjoy the sale too.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause but my son comes first no matter what.

I have had some messages asking if I’m open to the public and I am not at this point. I run this nursery out of my house and it’s just me. Although someone is always home there’s just a lot going on right now. That being said, I’m open to the idea of being open by appointment sometime.

Feel free to call or text (text preferred right now) me with any questions. I’m bad at checking FB messenger.

Thank you!

I’m hosting a native plant sale here at my place June 20 & 21. I need to lower my stock ASAP for two reasons: 1) I went “all-in” on a soil mix that has turned out to not be all so great. That problem has been fixed for all future plants but I don’t have the time to replant 3000 plants. The plants in the less than ideal mix are doing fine and will do great once planted, but I’m not satisfied with it for future use.
2) my son was diagnosed with cancer back around Easter and our schedules are too erratic with chemotherapy to take proper care of all this through the summer. My wife and I have been spending all our time and efforts towards his recovery so I need to spend what time I do have at the nursery working on starting a new and better fall crop.

Most of what I have right now are grasses but I also have a decent amount of forbs available. I had done an inventory a while back but I lost some during the first month after his diagnosis so I’ll have to update the numbers. The species available are *mostly* correct. There’s a whole separate pad of plants I just didn’t get pictures before it started raining.

All operations here have been on standby but we will be gearing back up soon to offer more variety and better quality.

Hello all- I just wanted to check in on the business page and give an update of my absence.

My son was diagnosed with cancer right before Easter and nursery operations have come to a grinding halt. I still have loads of plants being kept alive but any new propagation or new species will be paused until I can be home more consistently. I am working on an updated availability list and will post that when I get some time. Hoping to resume in a few weeks when we can get accustomed to new chemotherapy regimen.

Thank you all for being understanding. Side note- the prairie restoration at the nursery is looking incredible after the burn. So many good plants, grasses, and pollinators popping up. These pictures are exactly 1 month apart. I’ll make another separate post about that soon.

Yesterday morning we conducted a prescribed burn at the nursery property. Special thanks to the North Texas Prescribed Burn Association, Texas A&M AgriLife, and Trinity Prairie Company for coming to assist. We could not have done it without these groups.

Well-timed burns strip off the dead layer that builds up in prairies over time and restricts the growth of new plants.

Within a few weeks, this now barren hellscape will be full of lush green grasses and wildflowers that can actually breathe now that the decades of thatch buildup has been removed.

Native grasses and native wildflowers then attract an incredibly diverse wildlife population from deer to songbirds to pollinators and microbes. Life always brings more life, but you must start from the ground-up for it to be balanced.

Burning is also incredibly beneficial in livestock production. Native grasses and forbs are much more nutrient-dense than their introduced/invasive counterparts such as coastal Bermuda. They also require zero fertilization or supplemental water. Less work and more weight gain is a win-win.

I couldn’t be any happier with the job this team did yesterday and am patiently awaiting the transformation that’s about to occur over here on this 30 acres of the Crosstimbers ecoregion.

For more information on prescribed burns, please send a message or give me a call. Joining the North Texas Prescribed Burn Association is a great way to get involved.

Eastern Gamagrass (Tripsacum dactyloides) is one of the most powerful native grasses in North America. This warm-season perennial can reach 6–8 feet tall (we also have a dwarf variety) and produces a massive root system that improves soil structure, water infiltration, and drought resilience.

It’s highly valued for wildlife habitat, providing cover for birds and small mammals, while also serving as a nutritious forage grass for cattle with excellent summer productivity. Because of its deep roots and long lifespan, eastern gamagrass is also an outstanding species for erosion control and prairie restoration projects.

Some of our 1 gallon golden groundsel is starting to bloom out. This early-blooming species is a much needed nectar source in early spring. It likes shady areas and can act as a great ground cover with the dense colonies it can create.

The Groundog did see his shadow, but really... who are you going to believe? The groundhog from Pennsylvania or the armadillo from the Texas Hill Country? 🤔

The outside plants are tucked in under a layer of leaves, shade cloth, and a layer of snow & ice. Indoors everything was moved to the ground and there’s a little supplemental heat to try and keep it just above freezing. This is my first winter with the nursery and I can tell you I don’t like the freezes!
