**Signs of Water Heater Failure**
1. Inconsistent or No Hot Water
Sign: Water is lukewarm, takes too long to heat, or turns cold quickly.
Possible Cause: Failing heating element (electric) or burner (gas), sediment buildup, or thermostat issues.
2. Strange Noises
Sign: Rumbling, popping, or banging sounds from the tank.
Possible Cause: Sediment build-up hardening at the bottom of the tank, causing overheating and noise.
3. Leaking Water
Sign: Water pooling around the base of the heater.
Possible Cause: Corroded tank, faulty valve, or loose connections. Leaks can signal internal tank failure.
4. Rusty or Discolored Water
Sign: Brown, reddish, or muddy water from the hot tap.
Possible Cause: Rust inside the tank or deteriorating anode rod. May also indicate pipe corrosion.
5. Reduced Water Pressure
Sign: Hot water flow is weaker than usual.
Possible Cause: Sediment or mineral buildup blocking pipes or water lines.
6. Water Smells Bad
Sign: Rotten egg or metallic odor from hot water.
Possible Cause: Bacteria in the tank (especially in well water systems) or a failing anode rod.
7. Unit Is Over 10 Years Old
Sign: The water heater is 10+ years old (check the serial number for date).
Possible Cause: Aging unit nearing the end of its lifespan—even if it's working now, failure is more likely soon.
8. Pilot Light Won’t Stay Lit (Gas Units)
Sign: Repeated issues with lighting or maintaining the pilot flame.
Possible Cause: Faulty thermocouple, gas valve issues, or dirty pilot light.
🔧 What to Do
Minor issue? A plumber may be able to replace a part.
Major signs or old unit? Replacement is usually more cost-effective.
Prevent future issues: Drain and flush your tank yearly, and inspect the anode rod every 2–3 years.
