Originally opened in 1968, Northfield Elementary School underwent a comprehensive renovation and expansion to better serve its growing student population while remaining fully operational throughout the 18-month construction period. Through carefully phased construction and the use of portable classrooms, the project minimized disruptions to daily school activities.

The renovation and additions introduced six new classrooms, dedicated art and music rooms, a gym activity room, and an expanded cafeteria. A major sustainability milestone was achieved by converting the existing mechanical system to a geothermal heating and cooling system, making Northfield Elementary the first LEED-certified school in Howard County.

Evergreen Elementary School was the first new public school in St. Maryโ€™s County to achieve a LEED NC โ€˜Goldโ€™ certification. The project was also honored with the โ€˜Award of Excellenceโ€™ as the โ€˜School Project of the Yearโ€™ by the Maryland Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council.

Key sustainable features include green vegetated roofs, a rainwater harvesting system used for flushing toilets, and the integration of a wind turbine and solar PV panels as interactive teaching toolsโ€”creating a hands-on learning environment that showcases real-world sustainability in action.
