A long-term study from Chicago looked at how tree canopy changed in different neighborhoods over several years and compared that with local mortality rates. The results were surprisingly straightforward: when neighborhoods gained tree canopy from one year to the next, mortality went down. When they lost canopy, mortality went up.

What stood out is that it wasn’t about how many trees a neighborhood had at the beginning. The important factor was change over time. Adding canopy was linked with better health outcomes, and losing canopy—especially in hotter parts of the city—was linked with worse ones.

It’s a reminder that trees do more than make a place look nice. They help cool neighborhoods, improve air quality, and support people’s well‑being in ways that show up in real health data.

Just an interesting piece of research worth thinking about as cities grow and temperatures rise.

A new threat to North Dakota's conifers has been confirmed this week: pine wilt disease. This discovery will have a great impact on our state's windbreaks and community forest resources, as non-native species of pine (like Scotch pine) are a commonly used tree in these settings.

While investigating mortality in Scotch pine trees, our Forest Health staff tentatively identified pine wilt disease in Ransom County at Sheyenne River State Forest and in Sargent County near Forman, ND. The finding was confirmed on August 11, 2026, by the South Dakota State University plant pathology lab.
