When clients describe the home they want, "romantic modern" comes up more than you'd think. They want softness, warmth, and layered textures. They also want clean lines, real function, a space that holds up to school mornings and Tuesday dinners, and the occasional spilled glass of red wine. What they're describing, often without realizing it, is a style that must hold two opposing ideas simultaneously.
In this Aldie home, the velvet tufted bed is paired with luxury bedding designed with allergies and the washing machine in mind. The family room draperies have blackout lining and motors that run from the client's phone. The breakfast room seat cushions are a high-performance peacock teal—soft to the touch, but a spilled cup of coffee is no big deal. And the coffee bar exists because the clients are serious coffee drinkers with a 50+ mug collection from their travels, not because a mug rack photographs well.
That's the line between a romantic-looking room and a romantic room you can actually live in.
