Wing and a Prayer Nursery

Wing and a Prayer Nursery Seed-grown native plants to create and enhance life-sustaining biodiverse habitat for pollinators, birds, and other New England wildlife

The nursery is currently closed for the winter, but will reopen in spring - stay tuned for details as warmer weather approaches. We are a small nursery, and our focus is on seed-grown native plants that support the pollinators, birds, and other wildlife of New England. We never use pesticides. We are happy to offer plant suggestions for your garden, and do also offer full design services - see our website for more information.

It was a great opening weekend last week, despite the rain all day Saturday. Thanks to everyone who came out to shop for plants in the wet weather!

This year we have a shade garden section, and the foamflower is blooming and looking beautiful right now. We’ve got some spring ephemerals too- bloodroot, twinleaf, eastern shooting star, and mayapple. Plus we have a selection of ferns - royal fern, ostrich fern, Christmas fern, and maidenhair fern, to name a few.

This upcoming Saturday looks clear and beautiful! Open Fridays and Saturdays from 10-3.

Opening day tomorrow, May 8th from 10-3! Check out the new location at the easternmost end of Powell Rd in Cummington (near the intersection with Brickhouse Rd). We’ll be open Saturday as well, from 10-3. We have a shade plants section this year! Many more plants will be available in the next few weeks as slower species emerge and freshly up-potted plants get their roots established, but we’ll have about 85 species available tomorrow.

Setting up display tables at the new nursery location today! Still lots to do before opening day on May 8th (open from 10-3!) but getting some tables set up was a big step. Big thanks to Ben for building the tables and setting them up while I shuffled plants around!

As many of you know, the 2026 season will be the first season with Elena (me! pictured at left, next to Amy) at the helm of Wing and a Prayer. I’m working on a newsletter with some spring announcements, dates, and other important info about this growing season- if you’d like to receive the newsletter make sure to sign up on our website (linked in the bio, or visit www.wingandaprayernursery.com)!

Spring officially starts tomorrow morning at 10:46am … looking forward to shedding the last few hours of winter and (hopefully) the spring weather will soon follow. So much to growing to do this year!

Winter is really hanging on this year….but the snow does look so beautiful, especially on this Hobblebush twig (viburnum lantanoides). Hobblebush leaves remain like this through the winter, ready to pop open as soon as warmer weather hits. As an understory shrub, it takes advantage of leafing out early and getting a head start on photosynthesizing before overstory trees have fully leafed out. It blooms beautiful white flowers in spring and is a host plant for the spring azure butterfly.

This one is hard to find in nurseries- it’s hard to germinate and very slow growing. It won’t be available at the nursery this season, but if current growing experiments work out, perhaps we will have it in future years.

Another native plant offering striking winter beauty is winterberry, ilex verticillata. Brilliant red berries hold on long after the shrub’s leaves have fallen, making them easy to spot in the landscape, especially with snow as a backdrop. Winterberry loves wet areas, and you can often see it growing in low points along the roadside and near marshes and swamps. The berries are a great winter food source for birds that don’t migrate- especially waxwings, mockingbirds, blue jays, and American robins. Only female plants produce berries, and require a male plant nearby to provide pollination. We’ll have some available at the nursery this spring!
