Happy National Mom and Pop business Owners Day!!

While we are two siblings working out of Florida, we fully understand just how hard it is to run a successful small business.

What most people don't know, is that our economy couldn’t run without small mom and pop businesses. They create economic growth and provide almost 70% of all new jobs in the country. That’s why every year we acknowledge the more than 27 million small businesses in this country by celebrating National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day!

The holiday was started by Rick and Margie Segel in honor of their parents and the successful hat shop they opened in 1939 and grew into a 10,000 square foot, $2 million dollar clothing shop.

So today is a special day, one where we appreciate the long hours, hard work and dedication it takes to run a small business. So on March 29, head to your favorite small business to say thank you!

You know what time it is!! We have another Fun Fact Friday for you guys!

Today we are highlighting SWEET POTATOES!

Many people think yams and sweet potatoes are the same, but a true yam is a starchy, edible root of the Dioscorea genus, and is generally imported to America from the Caribbean.

Depending on the variety, sweet potato flesh can vary from white to orange and even purple.

Sweet potatoes are high in beta carotene, vitamins E and C, iron, potassium and vitamin B6.

Sweet potato roots are harvested 90 to 120 days after transplanting.

North Carolina’s official vegetable is the sweet potato.

February is National Sweet Potato Month.

How to store sweet potatoes:

Avoid storing sweet potatoes in the refrigerator, which will produce a hard center and unpleasant taste. Instead, store your sweet potatoes in a cool, dry, well-ventilated container. For best results, store them in a basement or root cellar away from strong heat sources. Sweet potatoes can be stored for up to two weeks.

As Spring is finally here, we know darn well that planting spring vegetables is a task many gardeners relish. After spending a long winter indoors, many gardeners are excited to step outside and get their hands in the dirt.

But, early spring veggies don’t just offer an opportunity to exercise green thumbs, they’re also among the most delectable treats the garden has to offer.

Here are five vegetables that thrive in the cool weather of early spring, going from seed to harvest well before the summer temperatures soar.

1. Snow Peas
Like their shell and sugar snap cousins, snow peas are cold-weather veggies best planted the moment the soil can be worked every spring.

2. Lettuce
Lettuce is among the easiest early spring veggie to plant. It is best to start by seed!

3. Kale
Often called a “superfood” for its nutritional punch, kale is a great early spring vegetable to plant.

4. Radish
This is another spring vegetable well worth growing, especially because store-bought radishes pale in comparison to homegrown roots in the flavor department.

5. Broccoli
Like many other members of the cabbage family, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, and Brussels sprouts, broccoli is an excellent early spring veggie.
