Limestone cladding has properties which allow it to breath thereby keeping the exterior warm in winter and cooler in summer. It is also of nature so no chemical additives and no releases into the atmosphere. It also requires little or no maintenance other than an occasional washing with mild soap. Limestone cladding is a favorite sustainable material for our architecture firm.

As an Architect, I work to find solutions and materials to make buildings sustainable regardless of the scale or function of the project. One material I use often is Structural Steel. Structural Steel can be recycled indefinitely and typically is fabricated within 100 miles of the ultimate installation.

What happens when an gets a ? He designs and builds a custom grill island!

The island will support an extra large grill and provide storage for charcoal and grilling accessories.

Swipe left ➡️ to see the foundation framing for the unit. 4x4 cedar posts were set in concrete 18” blow the surface with framing cantilevered on all 4 sides. This will make the island appear floating.

➡️Secondary framing for the base is laid over the foundation framing and mechanically fastened with deck screws.

➡️Plywood deck is attached after this which will support the main enclosure.

➡️2x4 wood stud balloon framing is attached as the backup for the main island enclosure.

➡️5/8” plywood is attached to the framing members. This will be the secondary skin for a rainscreen system.

➡️Aluminum strips are applied to cover the joints and black asphalt emulsion is painted onto the plywood enclosure. This provides a waterproof barrier.
