Some projects begin with clients. This one began with a classified ad.

I bought this 800 square-foot Manhattan apartment at 22, long before Jean Liu Design existed. Originally part of Joseph Pulitzer’s mansion designed by Stanford White, its architecture had already lived several lives before becoming my New York retreat 🏙️

Small in square footage. Big in personality.

Save this as a checklist for your next room 👀

“Modern” and “Warm” aren’t opposites.

Our favorite contemporary rooms tend to have tension: new with the old, refined with imperfect, quiet architecture with expressive art.

These are the six principles we return to again and again.

Jean’s Design Notes, No. 01 📝

More isn’t always more.

This is one idea that influences how we think about rooms, and one we’d hapilly see become a trend again.

Before there was a room, there were fragments.

A landscape. A palette. Stone. Wood. Textiles. References pinned and repinned. Samples moved around a table more times than we’d like to admit.

Then slowly, they began to speak the same language ✨

The room behind the room. For the Southern Living Idea House pantry, we traded a purely fitted-kitchen feeling for something a little looser and more soulful: butcher block, open shelving and inspiration from the traditional French larder.

Because even the hardest-working spaces deserve some charm.

More materials don’t necessarily make a room more interesting. Sometimes restraint does. In the Idea House, we repeated the kitchen’s quartzite in the w**e hallway rather than introducing another stone. 💎 Especially when rooms aren’t enormous, a limited material vocabulary can create continuity and give each choice more presence.

A room for looking out as much as looking in ✨

For the living room at the Southern Living Idea House, the large expanses of glass and an earthy mix of vintage and contemporary furnishings help connect the room back to the Hill Country beyond it.

There are things you notice immediately in a kitchen, and then there are the details that quietly make the room work... What did you notice first?
