Celebrate the end of the winter season with Spring Ephemerals. These beautiful plants herald the change of seasons, found growing up through the leaf liter of fall, while the ground is still moist with melting snow. They emerge as trees are just forming new buds, taking advantage of the dappled sun, before they go dormant just after the tree canopy has filled in. Plants like Virginia bluebells, Dutchman’s breeches, Shooting star, Hepatica, and May apple provide early spring nectar for insects and hummingbirds.
Plant these spring beauties in your garden to enjoy the first delights of the new season. Plant them among companions that flower later to give the pollinators a continued source of food after the ephemerals have gone dormant.

A Small Return To Nature

When my husband and I bought our first home 13 years ago, it was in a densely populated area just on the outskirts of the city of Rochester, with houses separated only by driveways and a very small patch of lawn in the front and back. Slowly, we added native plants and shrubs, creating an oasis in our neighborhood for pollinators. As we added plants like Milkweed, Joe Pye W**d, Purple Coneflower and Yellow Wood Poppy, we saw bees, butterflies, and birds showing up to collect the nectar and pollen they had naturally adapted to. Though the area had been filled with homes and lawns, I liked to imagine some of these plants would have been here before all that development and we were just bringing them back. That we had created a small return to nature with our space.
The amazing thing about native plants is there is one for every space, as this is the area they’re adapted to. Our house had sandy soil and part sun, so we planted things that liked it there. After the first season of planting and watering, the plants were established, requiring very little maintenance, aside from some weeding, before they filled out the gardens.
No matter how big or small your space, no matter how wet or dry, sunny or shady, we have a native plant for that. Take a look around your landscape and see where you can fit some native plants and have a positive impact on the larger ecosystem. In time, the butterflies, bees, and birds will show up to thank you.

Black Walnuts produce nuts that feed many animals through the winter. However, Black Walnuts and related trees produce the chemical juglone, which is toxic to some plants. Juglone can affect plants growing within a Black Walnut’s root zone, so they weaken and die. There are a variety of plants that will grow under these trees and are not affected by juglone. Amanda’s Native Garden has a list of our native perennials that will grow under Black Walnut trees. After all, you rarely see a tree that has nothing growing under it.
