Mowing your lawn short in the summer is what you should NEVER do. It can become scorched from that hot sun and it can invite the weeds to grow. Let your grass grow and set your mower blades up to around 3.25--3.50 inches. In the Fall it is now safe to lower your blades and cut your lawn the shortest height you have all season. Preferably about 2.50 inches.
