Dear People,
Strangest phenomenon... (cue sarcasm). For years I hear about stamp benefit recipients wasting their benefits on junk food... its the cry of folks with privilege. Their "tax dollars being wasted".
Today, what I saw after two weeks of those benefits being held and those recipients finally getting them back only yesterday?
Shelves empty of milk, yogurt, eggs, and meat... for the record, mostly pork, which is least expensive in our current economy. The store running out of off brand cereal, oatmeal, and bananas.
Not chips and soft drinks. Not energy drinks and candy.
Don't let those privileged cries fool you. These folks were starving for dairy and protein and produce, not sugar and snack food.
They want you to think that people who receive these benefits are lazy and ignorant, but they're just everyday people trying to make it in a world where FOOD is tarriffed. Where its impossible to live on minimum wage alone, let alone with a family. A world in which those who can afford pork chops would see those who can't, starve to death, child or not.
Make no mistake, I'm fully aware there ARE people who take advantage of the system. But do we let hardworking millions starve because of a few bad apples? Abso-f**king-lutely not. Fix the system if thats your main bitch. Don't punish those stuck in a broken system where there's no ability to earn more. No ability to to climb because those with privilege are punching down.
My heart is both sad and happy.
Sad that it comes this. That these same folks will most likely also see slashes to their Healthcare later. That we had to trade doctors for food.
But happy to see my people happy and a little less scared, for the time being. The store was full of smiles and hope yesterday and today.
Please do better America.
Sincerely,
An actual American who cares about other actual Americans
And by that, I mean to say, human beings living in this country without a silver spoon... the people this country is actually built upon.
