Vanilla plantifolia or "vanilla orchid" has seed pods used for vanilla flavoring. A vanilla orchid grown as a houseplant most likely won't produce the flowers and seeds required to make your chocolate chip cookies. Still, they are truly beautiful plants. Ours come in hanging baskets for $54.99.
Vanilla orchid plants make excellent container houseplants when grown as a vine, because this type of orchid is both epiphytic and semi-terrestrial. It lives above the ground where roots attach to tree trunks, the plant's source of water and nutrients. To grow a vanilla orchid vine in a pot, some support is needed for the vine to climb. We especially love Mossify bendable and flexible moss poles for this job, available in all our stores.

Rhaphidophora Korthalsii
It sounds like a name straight from Game of Thrones. It is actually a rare houseplant also known as the decidedly less sexy "Shingle Plant".
Rhaphidophora Korthalsii is an aroid climber closely related to monstera, pothos, and philodendron. As the plant grows, it produces aerial roots along its stem that help anchor it to a vertical surface. In this photo from our Davidsonville store, you can see the leaves are clinging to a wooden board. We also love Mossify brand poles to help Shingle Plant, as this brand come in a larger, thicker size with fibers the plant can attach to as it grows. In fact, shingle plant grows and looks best with a porous support on which to ascend.
Shingle plant, like power and love, can be slow growing. Eventually (not unlike our favorite character Daenerys) the plant reaches great heights. In fact, it can grow to several feet tall indoors. Unlike Dani, who of course suffered a great fall, with good care, Rhaphidophora Korthalsii will become a striking floor plant.

Today is National Siblings Day and we're celebrating plants that grow well together. We adore houseplants in mixed containers, just as we do plants for outdoor containers. There are a few tips to keep in mind:
1) Plant like with like: choose varieties that need similar light, water and humidity.
2) Choose interesting foliage tones that compare and contrast nicely with each other.
3) Choose a pot with drainage that will accommodate plant growth
4) Choose plants that will make everyone o-o-oh and a-a-ah. We call these Filler, Spiller and Thriller.
5) Choose the appropriate soil and feed for your plants, then set them in the perfect spot for you and your guests to enjoy. Be sure to choose a spot with light considerations in mind!
