Trim match is darn close! Point of this post? Don't let your contractor tell you the trim doesn't exist. Of course it doesn't, it was made over 100 years ago. You must have the ability to think outside of the box. If your contractor does not, fire him! Started off with birch board cut down to a true 8 in height and topped with window molding. We found a stock piece at Lowes that was very similar in size and profile. Cut off the contour portion and added it to the top of the birch. Again, we could have milled it but our pockets aren't that deep. Not too shabby for a property that was one of the first major land holders of Daytona Beach!

Why not just do it right the first time? Costly, yes but there are alternatives. Got a 1 inch birch board cut to 8" lengths which resulted in savings over traditional baseboard. Plus we need true 8". Previous owners cheaped out on the addition and installed crappy baseboard. We are ripping it out and matching the original in this 100+ year old Florida house. The top is a close match, profile and size are similar enough to fool the eye when painted. Yes, milling an exact match is an option, just depends how much you have to spend. Next we are opting for square floor trim! Why does it have to be round? Wait until you see the difference!

The making of a Grand Entrance! Look how narrow it was! And dark! All the natural light filtering in really brightens up the space. The door was offset and too costly to move so we added a barn door to make the space more pleasing to the eye. It also served as a functional privacy slider. A new entry and french door updated the guest bedroom and wall of french doors open up to the the new dining space.

Almost time to take this wall down! Creating a space with lots of natural light. Closing up the window to make space for an armoire, replacing the French door and carving out a 6 foot opening into what will be the dining room, library combo. Darren Kent
