Great news for one of our projects in Springfield! We have been working with First Resource Properties for nearly 15 years on various projects, and for the past 2 years on this property (known as Merrick Park), which will bring much-needed affordable housing to downtown Springfield. Congrats to the entire FRC team.

I attended the groundbreaking ceremony today Holy Cross family Ministries of today in Easton, MA. The ministry is dedicated to the power of prayer and families. A dramatic plan includes a new vehicular entry sequence and parking, new building entry vestibule, European style plaza, and a contemplative rosary path through the woods. This $5M project will be largely complete next fall. A variety of approaches to planting, from formal parterres to naturalized meadows and rain gardens.

When is a parking lot not just a parking lot?

RDA worked with City of Newton Department of Public Works, Library Board of Directors, and Environmental Partners on the renovation of the Newton Free Library’s parking lot to accommodate new solar canopies.

The parking lot circulation was re-oriented and resilient features were added such as permeable paving and drainage improvements. RDA used a 100% native planting palette for the new parking lot islands and to enhance the space surrounding an existing wetland. On our various visits to monitor the plants we were pleased to hear many positive comments from the library visitors. What warms our hearts even more is the sight of all the pollinators that keep happily buzzing throughout the site. One can’t help but smile when observing the wildlife that the plantings invite. We created not just parking islands, but a network of small pollinator friendly gardens.

A major back and front yard upgrade was overdue for this home built in the mid-90’s. The existing patio was an inadequate size to accommodate this family of five or to host larger gatherings. A large brick dining patio sits beside a natural bluestone sitting area which is oriented toward a pull-down outdoor movie screen. This feature has become a hit with the neighborhood kids!

The owner also wanted a vegetable and flowering gardening, so we created a raised garden frame of wood timbers. Natural fieldstone retaining walls that double as seating create a slightly-raised entertainment area separate from the lawn area. And a few granite steps provide a graceful transition down to the lawn.
