Wet basement? Thinking of having those dry basement “experts” in? Here are two oil tanks in such a basement. The “experts” put their drainage around the oil tanks! If either of these tanks leak, oil will flow into the drainage system and under the cellar floor. This will be a very expensive cleanup if the tank leaks. Don’t let this happen! The drainage must be behind the tank! While it may require the tank to be moved to make it possible, the alternative is far worse! These people do not know the hazard they are creating. If your sump pump activates it may even pollute your neighbors property. Please call to ask us about things like this before getting the work done!

I just received a solicitation by phone for a chimney cleaning by a company that didn’t give their name. They “have crews working in the area” and were offering ridiculously low prices for that service. When I started to ask pointed questions he hung up on me. If you get a similar call, hang up on them! They attempt to lure you in with a low “cleaning” price and when they arrive they pressure you into unnecessary repairs. Don’t fall for it! If you need a referral for chimney work feel free to call me.

Bad things you find when you go to a new customer! Here is single wall fluepipe actually supported by wood! The second picture shows the bare pipe in a chase before connecting to the metal chimney termination. There is supposed to be a minimum of 18” from bare pipe to combustible materials. Even though it has been that way for many years without starting a fire the years of being heated this way actually lowers the combustion temperature through a process called pyrolysis where it can ignite at temperatures lower than 200 degrees. Think of an iron scorching cloth! I got the customer in contact with a good chimney installer to correct this before I service this equipment. The disturbing part is that the customer’s former oil service never advised them of this dangerous condition….
