Do you have a shady spot outside that needs some green? Is your home office boring and dull?

Get some cast iron plants! These plants seriously live up to their name. Virtually indestructible! Perfect plants for the busy, forgetful or for the notorious person who claims they kill any plant they touch! They thrive on neglect!

Not only are they indestructible they purify the air of toxins and distribute oxygen. Pet friendly for cats and dogs, you can place them anywhere in your home. Outside, they are resistant to deer and rabbits.

These slow growing superstars will take years to repot. A perfect set it and forget it plant!

Potted cast irons are $2 a piece. Unpotted plants are just $1 each!

Nursery is open to appointments only. Message to schedule a visit today!

Good morning! Who else is showing signs of life returning today?!? It's a wonderful feeling.

That's not permission for you to get out there and prune and trim to make it look pretty! Couple more weeks to go. You can do it!

Recently DeLand and surrounding areas was upgraded to zone 9B, but I still instinctually wait until March 15th. Our typical last frost date.

Continue to start your seeds if you haven't already. W**d top up your mulch and walk around to get a picture of what you wanted to look like for spring and summer.

Happy Super bowl Sunday. Can you guess what I'm doing? That's right. I'm gardening! 🤣🤣

Holding up my personal promise to get ready for spring so I'm sifting some aged mulch. This is what happens when you let a mulch pile sit for about 3 years. You get enough soil to last you through a few seasons, maybe a year. The best thing that you can do is make room in your garden space to take a couple loads of mulch from a tree trimmer or chip drop. I try at least to keep one pile to age for a few years, another pile that's somewhere in between and the third pile with the newest mulch that I can use for top dressing.

What are you doing today? Are you outside or are you getting ready for the big game??!?

A few pictures of the freeze damage that we had here. I'm very thankful for the things that survived, and the learning experiences of what is tolerant and what is not in my landscape.

You'll notice I built some winter frames and had them anchored into the ground for my mango and my star fruit but they were no match for the wind from the last cold front that came through. As a last resort I had to cover the stems with as much mulch as I could. Thankfully, it looks like the mango is alive, at least at the roots. The same for the star fruit.

So what can I do instead of looking at everything that's brown and moping about? Why not get ready for spring? Remulching all of my rows to increase my growing capacity and I'm starting some seeds to replace the peppers I lost. When I look around I'm not sad because pretty soon all of this will be green again.

What are you up to today?!? Let me know!

It is critical you resist the urge to prune, snip, trim or remove anything on the plants that took a hit from all the recent freezes.

All the extra dead foliage and branches can provide another protective layer for any other weather we might get. You also risk cutting off something that may still be alive!

Let it be, wait it out. If you need something to do, start planning your spring garden 🙂. Start seeds, top up mulch, something other than cleaning off your plants 🤣.

There's a specific quiet and stillness that only a winter chill can bring. I thought I escaped it when I moved to Central FL years ago, but here once again nature has surprised and amazed me. You can feel the shift and change in the air, I'm sure others that are tuned with the Earth feel it also.

To me, I feel this is a sign of an inevitable reset button that has been pushed by nature. We must remember the winter solstice is a time of isolation, contemplation and ultimately rebirth.

Sure, this is also a period of panic, and a rare occurrence of dealing with very low temperatures over a long period of time. We will feel many emotions, but let's not forget to balance it out with other emotions. Be thankful for nature hitting the reset button. Use it as an opportunity to learn, grow and restore, newer and better. As impossible as it sounds, use it to your advantage.

I'm not saying don't take any action to save what you can, even I am doing that. But in the end nature will do what it wants and will always win. Focus on your integral and important plants and trees. Celebrate the small victories and learn from the losses.

Let's shift to something just as important. City infrastructure is designed and built for the most typical environments that surround it. Although we may not see snow, think about the other infrastructures that aren't designed to handle extended periods of cold. Think of the animal shelters, shelters for people, or other facilities that utilize outdoor spaces. They will have difficulty during these weeks.

Look out for anything and anyone that may be exposed to what is coming.

For everyone, stay safe and positive. You will recover and regrow, better than before 🌿🌴🙂

Tonight is the last night before the temperatures crash for the rest of the week and throughout the weekend. A FREEZE WATCH has been issued for Volusia County.

Temperatures are expected to drop BELOW FREEZING in some areas.

Make sure you get out there and protect your sensitive trees and plants! Remember, make ghosts, not lollypops!

I know everyone is itching to get back outside and get some green, but hold on pruning and planting cold sensitive plants. Winter is not done with us!
