🏡 Custom Home Build Series | What’s Behind the Walls Matters!
Continuing our look back at the construction of this custom home, this week we’re highlighting one of the most important parts of the build — insulation, air sealing, and energy efficiency.
One of our biggest priorities when building this home was creating a tight, well-insulated building envelope. It’s something you don’t really think about once the drywall goes up, but it plays a huge role in how comfortable and efficient a home is for years to come.
For this build, we used ZIP System sheathing on the exterior, closed-cell spray foam along the roofline, and a flash-and-batt insulation system throughout the exterior walls. These systems work together to help minimize air leakage, reduce heat loss, and maintain consistent indoor temperatures.
With a home built this tight, ventilation is just as important as insulation. That’s why we also incorporated an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) into the HVAC system.
The ERV brings fresh outdoor air into the home while exhausting stale indoor air. It also recovers heat and some moisture from the outgoing air, helping provide fresh air without sacrificing as much heating and cooling efficiency.
Our goal was simple — build a home that holds onto the energy we’re paying to heat and cool it with, while still providing a comfortable indoor environment with proper ventilation.
A lot of these details are completely hidden once construction is finished, but they’re some of the most important decisions made during the entire building process.
That’s one of the things we enjoy most about custom home building. Being able to think through every detail, from the building envelope and mechanical systems all the way to the final finishes.
