Valentine’s Tree Poem

Like a tree, love doesn’t rush,
It grows in rings you can’t always see.
Strong from the roots up,
Shaped by weather, time, and care.

Some seasons are heavy with leaves,
Others are quiet and bare—
But even then,
The strength is still there.

Love is steady watering,
A little pruning when needed,
And trust that growth is happening
Even when it’s slow.

Happy Valentine’s Day ❤️
Here’s to deep roots and long lives.

What is Plant Health Care?

To further promote the professional practice of arboriculture, ISA partnered with Google Arts & Culture through the World Wide Wood project to educate the public about the benefits of trees and the work arborists do.

The World Wide Wood project is a digital exhibit that offers interactive elements, videos, 3D models, and more. This project encompasses over 100 partners in 36 countries, highlighting the complexity and importance of trees in our world.

One of the online exhibits created through the support of ISA’s Trees Are Good focuses on plant health care. Plant health care involves monitoring and implementing preventative treatments to keep trees healthy. Certified arborists can detect tree health concerns and apply treatments.

🌳 This bright little ball is called an oak apple gall. It forms when a tiny gall wasp — often from the genus Cynips — stings the tree. That sting causes a hormone dysfunction, and the tree responds by creating this round gall, which serves as a protective covering for the wasp’s eggs.

The neat part is they don’t harm the tree, just one of nature’s fascinating designs. 🍂

Happy Friday, everyone, take a look around nature is full of beauty! 🌳

For an invasive pest, the spotted lanternfly is a beautifully colorful insect. But don’t be fooled—this planthopper can be destructive. Officials want you to squash them on sight, but these tricksters can be difficult to flatten because they naturally leap away from predators when threatened. A water bottle however, can be an effective trap. See how: https://bit.ly/4mzjWYn

Take a walk in the woods! 🌳

History lesson incoming! Sassafras, a tree native to Ohio and the eastern half of the United States, is easily recognized for its three different leaf shapes, all grown on the same tree. But are you aware of its rich cultural history?

Sassafras was originally consumed by Native American tribes for both medicinal and food preparation uses. This usage was then adopted by European settlers arriving in North America, with sassafras being one of the first American exports to Europe.

Then, in the nineteenth century, a product we are still very familiar with today arose from the usage of sassafras—root beer. Much of root beer’s iconic flavor came from sassafras roots and relied on sassafras for its production until the 1960s. This is when safrole, a natural compound in sassafras, was identified as a potential carcinogen, leading to its ban in commercial food and beverages by the FDA. Since then, major root beer producers have replaced it with other ingredients.

Fun fact—if you tear a sassafras leaf and smell it, you will be greeted with a citrus-like smell reminiscent of root beer. Go try it out!

📣 We’ve Spotted Them! 📣
Spotted Lanternfly Confirmed in Our Area (Columbus)

That’s right—our team just confirmed the presence of the Spotted Lanternfly (SLF) locally. These striking but destructive insects are an invasive threat to trees, vines, and crops—including maples, oaks, black walnuts, and even grapes.

🪰 What You Need to Know:
• What is it? A planthopper with gray wings covered in black spots and bright red hindwings.
• Why it matters: SLF feeds on sap, weakening trees and leaving behind sticky honeydew that promotes sooty mold.
• Trees at risk: Ailanthus (Tree of Heaven), Maples, Black Walnut, Birch, and others.
• How they spread: Adults hitch rides on vehicles, firewood, outdoor equipment—be cautious!
• When to act: Right now. August through September is peak adult activity.

👟 What You Can Do:
• Kill adults on sight (yes, really—stomp them).
• Report sightings to the Ohio Department of Agriculture. https://agri.ohio.gov/divisions/plant-health/invasive-pests/invasive-insects/slf
• Don’t move firewood or yard waste between areas.
• Contact us for tree health assessments or treatment options.

🧪 Our Plant Health Care team is monitoring and ready to help protect your trees.

📸 Here’s what we found locally — stay alert and help us spread awareness, not the bug!

🌳 Let’s talk about this Lacebark Elm (Ulmus parvifolia)! 🌳

This tree has two main stems, with the bottom left image showing inclusion and even gapping—the seam is open in the middle. To help manage this structure and reduce risk, we’ve performed end-weight reductions and installed a dynamic hub and spoke system to keep the stems in compression where they are strong. This setup enhances stability while allowing for natural movement, supporting the tree’s long-term structural integrity.

Proactive care like this extends the life of your trees and helps reduce risk. This system will be monitored annually and has a lifespan of 10 years.

🚨 Large Split in a Red Maple! 🚨

🌳This co-dominant Red Maple (Acer rubrum) suffered a major split—something that could have been prevented with proper structural pruning at a young age.

While it could be bolted and cabled back together, at this stage, removal and replacement is the better long-term option.

🪚We structure prune all of our new plantings that will grow into mature shade trees (30’+ in height) starting two years after planting and then every three years after to establish a strong central leader and prevent failures like this.

We see this all too often in urban trees. Don’t wait until it’s too late! Regular pruning and tree care can help avoid costly damage and removals.

📢 Help us help our urban forest! Schedule an assessment with us to ensure your trees are growing with strong, stable structure.

🌳Controlled Tree Removal🌳

We recently removed 17 trees around this home to address their proximity to the structure and align with the owner’s long-term goals. While we love trees, sometimes they’re just in the wrong location—and that’s okay!

There’s no such thing as a bad tree, only a bad spot for one. Remember, we plant them too! 🌱
