Pruning "Suckers" on a Tomato Plant

A sucker is any new stem that will take nutrients from the plant without providing more fruit. Often shaded from higher leaves. No real value to producing you bigger better and faster riping tomatoes, as they suck away valuable nutrients.

Typically the only new stems you want to keep are the one directly below a flower. Thats the one new stem the plant will tend to flower and produce more tomatoes.

For big vining tomatoes like beefsteak or mortgag lifter limit to 3-4 total producing stems.

For smaller tomatoes like cherry and roma keep all you can afford to feed and water.

This place is PACKED with vendors today and the weather is beautiful. Come on out , grab some plants before your favorite varieties are sold out for the season and do some treasure hunting!

I also have the day neutral strawberry plant baskets with me. Only 3 left rt now!

Hanging Strawberry baskets. $25

This project is now ready!
Another Limited Edition

This is a special day neutral strawberry plant. The plant will make the berries anytime the conditions are correct all year long. The runner plants hang down similar to a spider plant and will also produce berries. The berries typically will be medium to small size as it is a potted plant.

The heat bed. Most of the hotter peppers and the super hots will be grown in containers mostly in the Greenhouse. I have found they love the higher heat and humidity in my test grow last year.

This bed went through stages so I grabed some pics for you.
1. W**d and clean up...adding what cover crops left...mostly chick w**d.
2. Till to losen soil.
3. Add compost and till it into the bed.
4. PLANT!

Pruning an upright growing petunia basket.

Deadheading is not enough to keep the plant heathy and blooming all summer. When the plant gets about as tall as the hanger, its best to heavy prune. Its scary to cut so much off the plant, but it is necessary to shape the plant, open the canopy, and encourage new growth and new flowers.

Here is the same plant before and after pruning. Next to how much was cut off. We should see new flowers in about 2 weeks. Hopefully right in time for early June markets.
