Ragweed vs goldenrod - who is to blame for your allergies?

One helps the bees, one makes you sneeze - Can you tell the difference?

Goldenrod species (Solidago sp.) are often confused for ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia). Even though ragweed is native to much of the US, it is very irritating to people's allergies and can take over crops and native species in a garden. Goldenrod does not and is an important keystone species for our environment!

Even though their flowers bloom at the same time and look really similar, their leaves give them away. Ragweed leaves have distinct, deep lobes. Goldenrod species have round or sword-shaped leaves.

There are many species of goldenrod, each one tolerating more sun or more shade, dry and moist soils. I'm happy to give free species recommendation for your garden - I mean look at how gorgeous they are with their native species friends!

Ragweed:
- Aggravates your allergies
- Takes over other species that don't
- Leaves look like this, with deep lobes
- Can trick you by blooming at the same time as goldenrod

Goldenrod:
- Leaves your allergies alone
- Provides food and shelter for thousands of species
- Round or sword shaped leaves
- Pays its bills on time
- Likes your dog
- Resistant to deer and drought

Don't pull your goldenrod - let her work!
