With the needto conserve water at an all time high, watering your kitchen garden can sometimes feel wasteful - even though what you’re watering is feeding you and your family...and maybe your neighbors if its zucchini season. 😆

So getting it right is super important not just from the water conservation side, but also because overwatering leads to runoff of nutrients and under-watering stresses plants.

(I’m totally picturing little nitrogen molecules running away with their little sneakers on 😂)

The first step is understanding and accepting that vegetables are not drought tolerant... and that’s ok.

There is a huge difference in using thousands of gallons of water every summer to water a lawn (which - no shame here - we have grass in our backyard) than there is in using far less water in the kitchen garden or in a low water landscape.

We NEED plants to feed and host wildlife, feed our bellies and souls, and cool off the planet.

And plants NEED water.

But if you're wondering how much water is "just right", then check out my latest blog post!

I'm sharing the best watering tips for your Denver backyard garden. 😘

You can grow veggies, herbs, and pollinator-friendly blooms right alongside your favorite ornamentals... and it can look stunning.😍

It’s called edible landscaping, and it’s one of my favorite ways to help Denver gardeners turn basic lawns into beautiful, productive garden spaces.

Here’s what it looks like:

🥬 Kale mixed with coneflowers

🌸 Zinnias tucked between pepper plants

🌿 Lavender and thyme edging a raised bed

Front yard gardens aren’t just possible...

They’re practical, beautiful, and totally legal in most of Denver.

Let’s talk garden tools. 👀Not the fancy, overhyped ones that break mid-season…

I’m talking about the actually useful, time-saving tools I grab at the start of every garden season here in Denver. 🙌

🧤 The pruners that never let me down

🪴 The tool that makes spring soil so much easier to work with

🧺 And the humble bucket that does it all

Ever water your garden bed and watch the water just... sit there? Pooling on top instead of soaking in?

You're not imagining it.

That's called hydrophobic soil, and it's really common in Denver, especially after beds dry out completely between waterings. The soil essentially becomes water-repellent. 🙃

Here's the fix 👇

🌱 Water slowly and lightly at first

✋ Mix lightly as you go to help moisture start to pe*****te

💧 Then water again once the top layer has absorbed

Starting with slightly moist soil (not bone dry) makes a big difference too. Deep, consistent watering beats letting beds dry out completely between sessions every time.

This is one of those things nobody tells you about until you're standing there confused with a hose. Now you know. Save this one. 💚

This is the watering concept that changed how I think about irrigation in Denver gardens. 💧

Shallow, frequent watering trains roots to stay near the surface, right where Colorado heat and wind evaporate moisture the fastest. Those roots are stressed, struggling, and always one hot afternoon away from wilting.

Deep, infrequent watering does the opposite 👇

🌱 Water slowly and thoroughly until moisture reaches 6 inches down

💪 Roots follow the moisture downward, where it actually stays

☀️ Plants become more drought-tolerant because their roots are where the water is

For raised beds in Denver, that usually looks like a deep watering every 2 to 3 days in peak summer heat, not a quick mist every morning.

Save this one. It's one of the most practical shifts you can make this season. 💚

Last frost alert!!! It looks like frost is a thing of the past, so the air temperatures are ripe for summer planting. 🙌 But don’t jump into it too soon or you might stunt your plants...

✅ Make sure that your SOIL temperature is consistently about 60° in the early mornings.

This will make sure that your seedlings don’t suffer shock and the seeds you plant will germinate quickly. 😘

With the weather warming up and things starting to level out temperature-wise, it's prime time to prep your seedlings for the great outdoors. ☀️

But hold your horses before you plunk them down in the sun all day. It's a process to toughen them up for whatever nature throws their way.

Wanna know more about this seedling survival boot camp? Check out this week's blog post for all the juicy details on how to properly harden off your little green buddies. 🙌

I couldn’t help myself. 👉 In honor of Star Wars Day today, this month’s to-do list is brought to you by the Force.

This is the way:

💦 It’s time to turn on your super-Ahsoka sprinklers once we’ve had our last frost. Temperatures should look like Tatooine in the forecast. Not Hoth.

🫘 Once we can get out of our Tauntaun, it’s time to harden off your seedlings so they’re strong like Beskar before placing them in your garden. We don’t want your plants to fry like the Emperor out there!

🌱 You can direct sow seeds like C-BeanPOs, Luke-cumbers, Corn Troopers, and Mace Windu-melon.

🥦 You still have time to transplant larger cool season veggies like Chewbroccoli and Kalerissian and to plant cool season seeds like RD-Beet2s, Boba Fett-uce, and Carrot Dookus.

🌿 Herbs are ready to go into the garden too. Han Solo-ntro and Senator Basil Organa can be planted by seed while Parsec-ly, Darth Sage, and Rey-semary can be transplanted.

🌶️ But everyone’s favorite part of May? This month you can transplant your warm season big hitters like Poe-matoes, Zeb-cchini , Pew-Pewppers and Ewokra.

💩 If you haven’t planted your garden yet this season, help your plants grow as big as a Purrgil by topping off your garden with Comm-link-post. You won’t get Mustafar without it and the plants will stay tiny like Jawas.

👣 So let’s make some Batha tracks out to the garden and get our hands as dirty as a Mudhorn.

Yoda have questions? Drop them out of hyperspace below. I’ll answer them Leia-ter today.

May the Fourth be with you.😉

Denver gardeners, this one's for you. 📅

Cucumbers, squash, and pumpkins are warm-season crops that hate cold nights. And in Denver, even when the days feel warm, our nights can still surprise us right through early May.

So here's my rule: wait until you're within one to two weeks of your last frost before starting these outside. Our average last frost is around May 7, so I'm usually planting my squash and cucumber trays in late April.

These seeds germinate so fast that you don't need the head start. Plant at the right time and they'll catch up to anything you would have started indoors weeks earlier, with way less stress on the plant (and on you 😂).

Full timing breakdown and the outdoor tray method are on the blog. Link in bio!
