Today, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement with the first ever being the largest single-day protest in human history. Who knew then that Earth Day would come to provide a voice to the environmental consciousness, putting environmental concerns on the front page. Here at Stems we are doing a small part to inspire the greater Denver area to plant environmentally friendly native gardens. Colorado’s native plants have thrived here for thousands of years and are perfectly adapted to deal with Colorado’s climate, soil types, pests, and water, or lack thereof.

This “carpet of changing colors” known as Dragon's Blood Sedum is a wonderfully dramatic succulent and a favorite of the Stems team. A year-round delight this hearty perennial is covered with bright pink starry flowers. Its green foliage turns a deep crimson come cooler weather.

Growing 4 to 6 inches tall and perfect for the Colorado landscape this highly drought-tolerant ground cover is one we hope to see more of!

This alien like perennial vine known as Maypop or Purple Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is a fast growing ornamental climber popular in the southeastern US.

Loved by herbalists, this unique cold tolerant flower can be used to reduce anxiety, pain, insomnia, ADHD, and inflammation. Both the flowers and leaves can be dried and used to make calming teas, tinctures, and infusions. They can also be used topically as poultices to heal cuts and bruises. There is a catch! This strange and interesting bloom only lasts a single day..
