Gold Strike Park: Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes Collaboration
https://youtu.be/W-MfXlZA4Vo?si=0d56k1PSrdqGAQDi

Wenk is proud to be collaborating with the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes and the City of Arvada through the design process of Gold Strike Park. The experience has been rewarding and educational for our project team as we strive to create a park for all while making connections to the site’s Indigenous history.

The City of Arvada Parks and Urban Design Department recently hosted the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes for a multi-day work session focused on cultural consultation and shared visioning for the design of Gold Strike Park. This video highlights the work between the City and the tribes, as well as the City of Arvada’s commitment to inclusive, respectful, and historically grounded public projects that honor the original stewards of this land.

Wenk’s Jennifer Mahan, project manager for the Gold Strike Park project, will be speaking with Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribal Historian Gordon Yellowman and Darin DeLay from the City of Arvada at the upcoming American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) conference in New Orleans on October 10th. Their presentation “Listening to the Land: Integrating Indigenous Perspectives for Restoration and Healing” explores how participatory park design fosters healing through Indigenous, local, and historic perspectives.

If you plan to attend the conference, we hope you will come and listen in!

Wenk's Greg Dorolek, Principal, spoke at ULI’s 2025 Spring Meeting in Denver, Colorado, alongside Marianne Eppig, Senior Director of Resilience for ULI. Together, they shared best practices and case studies on how to reduce water usage during droughts and mitigate flooding during excessive rainfall. This article summarizes their discussion.

Extreme weather events such as droughts and floods significantly impact vulnerable communities across the country—especially in places where the population continues to grow, creating even more tension between real estate demand and the risk of catastrophic flooding or drought. The good news is…

We love celebrating our team’s achievements, and today, we’re highlighting our talented landscape designer, Emily Moore! 🎉 Emily received the Outstanding Paper Award by CELA (Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture) 2024 for her graduate research at Kansas State University.

Her research explores how elementary school teachers’ and parents’ perceptions and attitudes of children’s contact with nature can inform place-based, design recommendations to improve children’s contact with nature.

You can find her research published in CELA’s Landscape Research Record, Vol 13: https://thecela.org/landscape-research-record-no-13/

RiNo's Arkins Park is featured in Bruce Dvorak's, FASLA, article in Living Architecture Monitor where he explores several rain gardens for their creative and multifunctional use of plants.

"An effective, resilient, and attractive approach to managing stormwater in urban areas can be achieved through a combination of grey infrastructure and a widespread application of nature-based solutions such as rain gardens and green roofs."

Rain gardens offer multifunctional stormwater management, integrating native plants to mitigate urban runoff. By mimicking natural water cycles, they complement traditional infrastructure, fostering resilience and biodiversity in urban landscapes.
