Meet Mark Johnson, Civitas’s Founding Principal!

Fueled by a career-long passion to make a tangible difference in the way cities work for people and the environment, Mark Johnson co-founded Civitas in 1984 and has guided its growth into an international leader in landscape architecture and urban design ever since.

Mark is respected globally for his impact on cities, on design education, and on the role that landscape architects can play in leading communities through complex projects to successful results. His design process centers on asking questions, challenging assumptions, and seeking relationships between issues that others may not see. An exceptional listener, effective speaker, and empowering leader who inspires and guides team members to generate creative, innovative ideas, Mark is sought by clients and collaborators for his willingness to challenge urban issues that are rooted in economic, political, legal and social issues. His commitment to addressing these conditions and improving life in cities through the natural environment has resulted in the implementation of some of the most transformative projects in the country.

Mark has been a recognized thought leader and a regular lecturer at AIA, ASLA, APA and ULI events for decades. Passionate about education and lifelong learning, he frequently participates in issue-driven symposia around the world, including the International Academy of Design and Health, with whom he has lectured in North America, Europe and Asia on the role of community design in promoting public health. He serves on the board of the Brooklyn-based Van Alen Institute, which seeks to create equitable cities through community-led design. Mark has also contributed to numerous design juries for national awards and competitions; has chaired the editorial committee of Landscape Architecture Magazine; and is co-founder of the CEO Roundtable, an independent association of the leaders of top global landscape firms who meet biannually to identify trends and assess their impacts on the profession.

Creating a Welcoming Water’s Edge - Maurice A. Ferré Park

When the City of Miami was motivated to transform a neglected area into useful and attractive space for residents and visitors, Civitas teamed up with Cooper Robertson to design a place that integrates multiple cultural and recreational elements, links to other parts of the city, and offers great public spaces at the water’s edge.

Formerly known as Museum Park, this 32-acre waterfront park creates a new cultural district that playfully integrates the Miami Art Museum and Miami Science Museum with multiple gardens, recreation and event spaces, and welcomes visitors to Miami arriving on cruise ships in Biscayne Bay.

We first met Neotha Leslie as an intern in 2006, when she was working on her Master’s in Landscape Architecture. She credits Civitas’ design rigor, commitment to craft, and collaborative energy for bringing her back to the firm in 2022. But really it’s Neotha’s own caring approach, her willingness to question the details, and her ability to design meaningful spaces with lasting impact that make us feel lucky she’s part of our team.

Engaging a Small Community to Realize a Big Vision: Black Bay Park

Re-opening today, this 60-acre hidden gem along the Spokane River in the small town of Post Falls, Idaho, has been transformed into a shared asset for the whole community to access and enjoy.

While many cities are actively working to reconfigure industrialized parts of their towns into parks, Black Bay Park is already a natural oasis. Keeping the integrity of the site’s natural design features was a top priority for not only the team but also for highly engaged members of the community. The design is also motivated by the desire to enhance the arrival experience into the park and provide more amenities ranging from restrooms and trash receptacles to more elaborate play areas, riverfront overlooks, and safe water access, while ensuring the park and the river are easily and comfortably accessible to everyone.

Meet Dina Luo, a Designer who has been at Civitas since 2023!

Dina earned her bachelor’s degree at Sun Yat-sen University, which included an exchange study in Taiwan and a summer program at the University of California at Berkeley. After earning her degree, she then went on to attend the University of Virginia where she earned a master’s degree in landscape architecture, followed by an immersive trip to the southwest to dive deeper into her understanding of landscape architecture. This process of combining her educational studies with traveling opened her eyes to the value of connecting with the land in order to better understand and help the local community. Dina believes that having a connection with the land is the best way to decipher what the community needs or oftentimes does not need. Dina has a strong passion for landscape architecture and is eager to partner with local communities to help amplify their voices and foster lasting connections with the land.

Ann and Jim Goodnight Museum Park: Turning an Art Museum Inside-Out

Surrounding the North Carolina Museum of Art, the renovated park not only provides unique space for exhibits and sculptures, it’s also frequently used for recreation, social gatherings and events that connect art, nature and people in a sustainable way.

A popular art gallery and community gathering place, the North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA) sits on an expansive parcel of land that was once the site of a youth prison and prison farm. Expanding its original 50-acre site to the current 164 acres, over time the Museum had already made strides to improve the large, naturalized portions of the site as a passive park for walking, biking and general recreation. But there was an opportunity to strengthen the connections between the land and the Museum further and extend the gallery outdoors in order to give the community a more defined place to gather and experience art in a uniquely personal and active way. The artists whose works are featured in these photos are Thomas Sayre and Barbara Kruger.
