Not every community that wanted a fountain got one. And in a few cases, cities that were offered one turned down the offer. For example, Seattle decided that the fountains might not be safe as you can see from this story.

Sometimes when we find updates about NHA fountains, the news is always helpful, but in a mixed kind of way. We want to thank Christopher Pollok, Historian In Residence at the Recreation and Park Department in San Francisco, for sending along a major update with pictures about the fountain in San Francisco since our last update showing the fountain in 1940. The good news is that the fountain still exists and we have a location. The bad news is that only the large bowl remains from its 1910 structure. Yesterday we were not sure about the fountain given to Jacksonville, but thanks to some additional research by contributor Brittany Luna including this picture, we now can confirm that Jacksonville did get a fountain and it was still in place as late as 1934. Now, we have to find out what happened to it. Story and picture at https://electronicvalley.org/derby/Greenway/Fountains/Jacksonville,FL.htm

Jacksonville, Florida - fountain or no fountain? We've been trying to determine whether Jacksonville, Florida ever received a National Humane Alliance Fountain. Some recent research from local newspapers seems to indicate that they did and that it was shipped from Rockland, Maine on September 11, 1909, and an unveiling was planned for November 23. However, that unveiling was postponed the day before because the fountain wasn't in place - and we still don't know if it ever was. Here's a very well-written and informative piece about the NHA fountains in South Carolina as well as some great historical background on the origins of the fountain and the quarries in Maine where they came from -

Five granite fountains remain in SC towns more than a century after a NY millionaire paid to install them across the country to provide water to animals.

We've been trying to find out what happened to the four fountains given to Newark and Belleville, New Jersey for a long time. Thanks to Kathy Duane, we are now much closer to that goal. She just sent us this spectacular picture of a 1906 fountain that is located in Popcorn Park which is an animal refuge park in Forked River, NJ. We've contacted people in the park who are now researching their own records, and we hope to have some news soon. ,
