What’s in your chimney?

What is creosote in a chimney?

“Creosote” is the name used for wood-burning byproducts and consists mainly of tar and soot.
Creosote buildup in your chimney has three degrees (1st, 2nd, & 3rd); each degree more difficult to clean and potentially more hazardous than the previous one.

How often should I have my chimney cleaned?

This is a tougher question than it sounds. The simple answer is: The National Fire Protection Association Standard 211 says, "Chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits, and correct clearances.”
