Cross-laminated timber (CLT) stairs taking shape at the Goldfinch Lofts project in Des Moines.

Goldfinch Lofts is officially under construction along Ingersoll Ave in Des Moines, Iowa.

The project is a new mass timber mixed-use development that is pursuing Zero Carbon Certification from the International Living Future Institute as well as Passive House Institute U.S. (PHIUS) Certification.

Once completed, the project will be the first ever LIHTC building in the nation to be Zero Carbon certified and the first multifamily housing project in Iowa to be Passive House certified.

Knop Killeen Architects is honored to be leading the design for a new two-story urban infill building located on a narrow zero lot line site between two existing buildings on 5th Street in Historic Valley Junction.

The project provides approximately 6,000 square feet of core & shell commercial space for a future restaurant and bar tenant. The building's exterior design and focused material palette of brick, stone, steel and mass timber structure has been carefully curated to appropriately fit within the existing context of the historic neighborhood and adhere to the City of West Des Moines design guidelines.

The Gable House is organized into two simple gable roofs that are heavily influenced by traditional Iowa barn forms.

One is for the living spaces, while the other is for sleeping spaces. The two symmetrical forms are delicately connected by a glass front entry and an outdoor patio that is seamlessly integrated into the existing wooded landscape.
