My grandmothers 10+ year old geranium!

This August is my grandma's 100th birthday. Scrolling through my photos, and I found this picture from a few years back. It made me smile, so I wanted to share 😊

Last year I made pickled green beans for the first time! They were so crunchy and addicting!!

I added garlic, dill, chipotle peppers (from a can), and mustard seeds!

It was so yummy, I made a second batch of several jars and gave one to my neighbor.

Only, when I went to eat some from my second batch about a week later- I noticed they were completely lacking in flavor. The garlic didnt oxidize, and everything was bland.

I was so embarrassed that my gift was nowhere near as tasty as my first batch!

Needless to say, I will not be gifting anything until I've taste tested a jar from the same batch as I plan to give.

My neighbor is absolutely amazing, though. I'm sure she forgives me šŸ˜…

I wanted to share a story about my experience with growing Dahlias and how it all started.

The takeaway from this story is that it pays to stop and talk to another gardener when you see them doing something you believe you can learn from.

In 2024, I drove by a house on a main road and noticed their flower garden. That house was along my commute to work so I would constantly look over at how well their garden was growing. I could tell from the street that they were growing Dahlias!

I previously grew Dahlias in pots when I lived at a rental house. I never dug up my Dahlias in the winter and they rotted. I was too afraid to reinvest in new bulbs because I didn't believe in my ability to overwinter them.

Well, one day in October- I saw the homeowners outside in their garden. They were digging up their dahlia bulbs for the winter. So I pulled over and stopped to speak with them and see their flowers up close! The woman, whose name is Susan was overflowing with knowledge and kindness. I learned so much in a few minutes! She even chopped some flowers for me! (The first photo is the bouquet she picked me) I was on my way to a clients house, and I found an old vinegar jug in my clients recycling bin. I rinsed it out and gave the flowers to my clients to appreciate!

Susan, the Dahlia expert even told me that I could come back in the spring and she would give me some pots of Dahlias. I was overwhelmed with joy!

I returned in the spring and she gave me 10 pots of sprouting Dahlias. I was determined to care for them well, and overwinter them PROPERLY!

I'm happy to say I successfully overwintered my Dahlias in my basement in some pine brush. I even ended up with double the amount of plants from what I had last year because I divided the bulbs!

Now it's my turn to give away bulbs to the next person in my life who needs a push to grow Dahlias. The financial investment can be intimidating- so giving away plants can really help someone in the same way it helped me to try!

Mishka update-

Hey, everyone. Mishka is doing better. He has not regained deep pain sensation in his hind legs, and may be paralyzed for life, despite everything we've done for him. I've been pretty depressed every day and trying to keep my chin up.

He's still doing physical therapy daily, and acupuncture every week.

We've seen a little bit of progress in his nerve response, even though he can't feel, his legs kick and move when you touch him, so we are holding onto hope for our little buddy.

He's getting his wheelchair very soon, too!

We are very grateful he does not need any pain medication and is in good spirits.

Who else is getting excited for Thanksgiving?

We are keeping things simple this year because of Mishka. I'm going all out with cooking, but we're staying home for the whole day!

Hey, everyone! Just wanted to give a quick update on Mishka!

As many of you know, he became paralyzed from the waist down in the span of one day and we rushed him in for spinal surgery.

Today marks 2 weeks of him being at home in recovery.

We took him in today to get his staples removed from the incision area, and the neurologist was very impressed how far he's come in just two weeks.

He's regained an amazing amount of reflexes in his back legs. He's kicking and straightening out his legs all on his own! He still has no ability to feel anything back there, but the doctor was excited and hopeful that he will be able to do something known as "spinal walking"

That's when the brain sends the signal to the legs for a dog to walk again even though there is no feeling.

We've been doing physical therapy and he's now allowed to go on five minute walks with a sling!

Here's a photo of Mishka and my succulents from last yearā¤
