As we have about reached the time where our windows will be closed, and our furnaces/boilers will be on untill the spring, ITS TIME TO CHECK YOUR SMOKE AND CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS!!!

Changing the batteries and checking the expiration dates on the detectors themselves are worth the minutes spent doing so!

Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless, and almost completely undetectable without the right equipment.

Most detectors that you can purchase now (home depot, lowes, ACE, or even the internet), are good for 10 years, but ALWAYS go by the date on the detectors themselves.

There are many styles to choose from making it easier than ever to upgrade without a painful install. Most round style detectors fit in the same size mounting holes as your previous ones. They even make styles that just plug Into an outlet!

Best rule of thumb is one detector per floor (basement included), and one either in each sleeping area, or just outside the doorway.

For those of you with NEST thermostats, they also make their own CO detectors that turn the furnace/boiler off when CO is detected.

Its also a good practice around this time of the year to have your heater and hot water tank checked and yearly maintenance done to ensure they are safe to operate, with no harmful levels of carbon monoxide building up or leaking out.

If you have any questions as always PLEASE give us a call to help you out!!

We we're already big fans of the I-wave family of air purification products, but now they just confirmed what we already expected it to do.

Independent studies in the COVID realm.

The test took place with the I-wave C (this is the commercial varient, made for bigger rooftop units)

Although the testing was not done on the residential lines we took the questions directly to the manufacturer today, as most of our customers would be using a smaller unit.

The internal components that make up ALL i-waves are the same. The only difference is the size of them, and the amount of ions it releases into the air. The residential models are expected to perform comparably to the commercial versions when used in the size area they were meant for.

A solid state design (no moving parts to break, or bulbs to change), self cleaning models, and were all designed to work with just about any amount of power thrown at it! The i-wave packs a serious punch, is usually installed in 30 mins or less, and requires ZERO work on your end to keep it running!

If you have ANY questions about this, heating, cooling, or hot water give us a call!

Whether we are ready for it or not, Air conditioning season is right around the corner! There are some common misconceptions as well as some things that are recommended maintenance wise every year for your ac.

A common thing we hear from new customers is something along the lines of “my AC needs to be recharged/refilled with freon or refrigerant”. Your residential system is designed to be a SEALED system. For someone to tell you that the system needs to be normally refilled or recharged is overlooking the real issue with the system, THERE IS A LEAK! A system with no leaks or issues will maintain its charge the entire life of the equipment. Finding a leak is not always fun, and may involve some time, special equipment, dye packs and many other forms of leak detection. When we find a leak is present and the charge is getting low, it is at that time we go over the system age, steps we would need to take, equipment warranties, type of refrigerant used and overall condition of the equipment with you. We go over this with you because sometimes a new system is a better way to spend your hard-earned money compared to a repair.

Something we see often as well, is pet urination on the outdoor unit. This over time WILL eat away at the aluminum in copper within the outdoor unit. Keeping pets away can save you the money of an entire new condenser. This can be hard to do at times, but sometimes placing even a open style fence a few feet around the unit, or having the condenser relocated to a spot outside of your home that is not accessible to your pets can help. Check out a picture of one we found last cooling season!

****
FUN FACT: Movie theatres were on of the first social businesses to adopt air conditioning systems in the early 1900’s. Ever wonder why the big “blockbuster hits” come out in the summer months? THIS IS WHY! As residential systems were far to expensive most home did not have one, the movies were the perfect escape to relax and cool off!

Your air filter is used for your heating and cooling sides of your system. The importance of air filtration benefits the air you breathe, just as much as it does protecting your equipment. When your filter is dirty, this restricts the air flow through your coil (the indoor portion of the central air system), decreasing the efficiency ( costing you more money in electricity), putting a heavy strain on the system ( shortening equipment life), and can lead to the indoor coil freezing into a block of ice. When the coil has frozen it must completely thaw to find our if the filter caused the issue or something with the equipment caused this. While thawing, the water can sometimes overwhelm the drain and leak out into the furnace or the area surrounding your furnace. Checking your filter every 30 days for most filters (changing when needed) is always recommended.

The cleaning of your condenser (the part of your system that is outside of your home) is also something that should be cleaned once a year. The fan in this unit pulls air from the outside of the coils in, and then blows that hot air out of the top fan grate. Many of the things that float around in the air outside are to big to pull through this coil and end up stuck to the outside. This can include leaves, cottonwood, lawn clippings, and many other things. As the system becomes “walled off”, the unit struggles to exchange heat, decreasing efficiency and life of the unit. Cleaning the system itself is something we can do during a scheduled checkup for you (among many other pieces of the unit we test and check for you). When to clean the system is something we hear on a regular basis throughout that cooling season, and the answer is different for everyone. Cottonwood is a big factor as when it falls and how bad it is in your area is always different. Generally speaking when the outdoor air temperature is above 60 degrees ( this allows us to put the system through its paces to find any shortcomings in performance), the cottonwood has fallen off the trees, and your are ready to use the system for the season are things to keep in mind when scheduling the checkup. For those of you not affected by cottonwood as heavily as others, this factor isn’t as important, and end of spring/early summer is the best time for you.

If you have any questions regarding your AC, a maintenance checkup to get you ready for summer, a new AC system, or anything involving your furnace or hot water systems give us a call today!

With everything going on in the world right now, and the fear of getting sick in the back of almost everyone’s mind, we figured this would be a great time to discuss air filtration, air purification, and how we can not only help protect your air, but leave it better than it ever was.

Air filtration is exactly what it sounds like. Filter the air within your home. This is a two-part subject as Proper filtration cleans the air we breathe, but will also keep your HVAC equipment clean, dirt free, and far less prone to part failures. Most all forced air HVAC systems have some sort of air filter. Your filter can grab allergens, dust, pet hair, dander, and many other small pieces. The sizes, style, filtration ability, and how long they last are different per filter system. Your basic 1” thick filter is the most common, cheap to install, cheap to maintain, easiest to forget change intervals (every 1-3 months of use), but also the least effective at capturing the things we want cleaned. The other downfall of 1” filter systems is that most of them are open, making them easier to change, but also leaving them open to dirt, dust, and debris skipping by them from you furnace area, defeating the purpose of the filter in the first place. Upgrading to a properly sealed media filter rack/cabinet (4” or 5” thick filters), supercharges your filtration ability. This filter rack needs to be installed in the system, once installed the filter is then changed every 6-12 months of use (every home has different change intervals). When comparing the 1” thick filters with the media filters, the media filters will win in every category, aside from price per filter. Most homes will not notice a price difference though, as the change intervals further apart.

Air purification is the direct treatment of our air. Although tackling a different area of air quality, a good filter, and a good purification can improve each other’s function. Gone are the days of just sticking a UV light bulb in your ductwork and calling it a day. The UV lights can greatly improve air quality, but the do burn out, and bulbs can be quite expensive depending on brand. With newer technology, plasma generators and air ionization are the better choices now. With many different styles we gravitate towards the simple, longer lasting, minimal maintenance, and no bulb replacement option. The ionization system we use (currently installed in almost everyone of our homes as well), uses about as much energy as your doorbell, is the size of a hockey puck, and takes minutes for us to install within your HVAC system. The design is solid state (in other words no moving or glowing parts to break on you) and requires the power to be turned off and bristles to be lightly brushed off once a year, that’s it. This system works with two antennas that stick out of its top. Positive and negative ions are made between these two points, while your blower motor stretches out to cover more surface area. Plasma generators and ionizations systems can drop static electricity, eliminate odors (cooking, smoke, VOC’s, etc.), kill harmful molds, bacteria AND VIRUSES. A big benefit of this system is that no ozone is created in the process, which some homeowners do not react well too.

Upgrading one of these systems, adding one, or adding both will GREATLY improve your air quality, and the overall health of your homes air. We feel safe within our home, and we should also feel confident that our air is far cleaner than what waits outside of our front door.

The subject of proper humidity within our homes, is one often overlooked. The reality of it all is that waking up with a sore throat, or the dog scratching all day and night are just small signs our home is too dry. With too much, or too little we change the health of our air.

When we sweat our body is releasing moisture from our skin, which then evaporates into the air. This change from a “liquid” to a “gas” is using our body’s heat, which leaves us feeling cooler. Low humidity in our homes has the same affect. As we live within low humidity, the air pulls moisture from our skin (that dry itchy feeling), cooling is, and causing some of us to turn the thermostat up a degree or two.

The next area of interest within the home affected by humidity (high or low) is furniture, wood objects, and instruments. When the air within our home starts to dry out, the air not only pulls from our own bodies, but everything containing more moisture than itself. Wood drying out can cause cracking, splintering, and improper alignment of more precision pieces. When humidity is too high we can notice bubbling of certain woods, sagging of some drywall tapes/seams, and discoloring of certain woods. High humidity is mostly found in the summer months and is normally controlled with closed windows and your central air conditioner.

Before we mentioned the “health” of our homes air. When humidity is within the optimal window the many things we strive to clean, take medicine for, and wash our hands to avoid, almost all taper off and CANNOT survive. A great humidity goal for those of us living in the snow belt, is 35-40. This is the perfect compromise between health and comfort.

*THE FIX*

Controlling humidity is one of the easiest, and easily forgotten aspects of our HVAC systems. In the summer months our AC system acts as a giant dehumidifier, lowering your home to a comfortable, healthy feel. When high humidity is still an issue in the summer months a permanently installed dehumidifier within your HVAC system will last much longer, and work much better than the overpriced store versions.

For low humidity within our home (most all of our heating season here in Michigan), a standard bypass humidifier installed within your system does the trick. With two different options (automatic or manual controlled), we can fine tune the unit to match your needs and goals.

If you have any questions about humidity, the health of your homes air, service or installation give us a call today!
