This week, the Albert Kahn team took a moment to slow down, stretch, and recharge with a lunchtime yoga session. 🧘‍♀️

As we head into summer, it’s a great reminder that taking care of our mental and physical well-being is just as important as the work we do every day.

Here’s to finding balance, embracing the season, and making time for ourselves along the way!

Last week, four members of the Albert Kahn Associates team traveled to Mackinac Island for the 2026 Mackinac Policy Conference, joining business leaders, elected officials, educators, and changemakers from across Michigan and beyond.

Kim Montague, President and CEO and member of the Detroit Regional Chamber Board of Directors, Andrew Danaher, Vice President and Treasurer, Andrew Stone, Vice President and Director of Architecture, and Stephanie Meiers, Senior Associate and Director of Marketing and PR, represented the firm. Andrew Stone and Stephanie Meiers also had the privilege of participating in the Future Leaders Cohort, engaging in dedicated sessions and direct conversations with leaders helping shape Michigan’s future.

This year’s theme, Finding Common Ground, showed up in every conversation. From manufacturing and mobility to education, poverty elimination, and Michigan’s role as a purple state, the conference challenged attendees to think bigger about what comes next. We heard from voices across the political and civic spectrum, each bringing different perspectives but a shared commitment to moving Michigan forward.

Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield’s message especially resonated with us: poverty elimination is not charity work, it is a growth strategy. When residents are healthier, more educated, and financially secure, they become the engine for long-term growth.

Albert Kahn has been part of Detroit for 131 years. We have watched this city fight, rebuild, and rise. We are not observers. We are part of the fabric here, and we are ready to help shape what comes next.

Thank you to Sandy Baruah and the Detroit Regional Chamber team for bringing Michigan’s leaders together with such purpose. Thank you to Robert Riney for his leadership as 2026 Conference Chair, Megan Spanitz for the care and strategy behind the event, and Dorian Gray for leading the Future Leaders Cohort with intention. Congratulations also to Tina Freese Decker on being named the 2027 Mackinac Policy Conference Chair.

We came back from Mackinac full of ideas, urgency, and belief in the work ahead. Michigan, we are in this with you.

On Memorial Day, we remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

It’s a day to pause, reflect, and hold gratitude for the sacrifices that allow us to live, work, and gather freely.

To the fallen and the families who carry their memory, we honor you today

Landscape Architecture Month comes to a close this week, and we saved one of our most meaningful topics for last: Restorative Design.

Restorative design requires as much restraint as it does creativity. The goal is not always to leave your mark, but to create spaces that quietly support people in their most human moments.

If master planning asks us to design for a future we may never fully see, restorative design asks us to create places people return to for peace, comfort, and healing. It is design that soothes without overwhelming, comforts without crowding, and creates the kind of safety that lets people finally exhale.

At the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House, our team was entrusted with restoring a landscape that had meant something deeply personal to a family for nearly a century. The work began with Kahn's historical archives, family photographs, and home videos that revealed not just what the space looked like, but what it felt like to be there. What we gave back was not simply a restored pool or refurbished waterfall, but a feeling the Ford family had always known in that place, now open to everyone.

At Sparrow Health System, now University of Michigan Health-Sparrow in Lansing, our team designed a healing garden centered around a walking labyrinth. Long used as a tool for meditation, reflection, and healing, the labyrinth offered a quiet path forward for people navigating difficult seasons of life. Shaped by the voices of the community it serves, it is a place where people can set down what they are carrying, even for a little while.

That is what restorative design gets right when it works. It does not announce itself. It just holds people.

Thank you for following along this month, and to our landscape architecture team, Stephen White, Riccardo Pappini, and Emma Weishuhn, thank you for letting us share your work, your thinking, and the philosophy behind it. This is why it matters.
