A Penny Saved is a Reputation Earned

Kingswood School at Cranbrook – Bloomfield Hills, MI.
When most people think of copper, they tend to think about coin change in their pockets as opposed to roofs above their heads. While copper is still used in roofing today, the material has lost ground to less extensive alternatives, and many of the most dramatic copper applications sit atop older buildings as prominent reminders of the craftsmanship of a bygone era. An ambitious attempt to resurrect the splendor of the past is exactly what CASS Sheetmetal did to the roof of Kingswood School on Cranbrook’s National Historic Landmark campus in Bloomfield Hills, MI.

At nearly 90,000 square feet, the copper roof at Kingswood School is one of the largest in the United States, but its structural integrity had degraded over time. Without corrective action, water intrusion would slowly erode the venerable structure designed by Eliel Saarinen. Following the completion of an initial roof replacement (30,000 square feet) by the owner in 2001, the design/build team divided the remainder of the project into three work areas. The first area, where the initial work began covered the roofing over the dining hall, auditorium, common room and old ballroom. For roofing contractor, Custom Architectural Sheetmetal Specialists, Inc. a copper roof saved is a reputation earned at the completion of this enormous project. www.casssheetmetal.com

Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial
CASS Sheetmetal Specialists - Detroit, MI

For as long as anyone can remember, American military forces have always fought in faraway locales, but the echo of cannons defending against invading armies and navies can still be heard today. The sound resonates in the boundaries that define our nation and in the abundance of natural resources found within. These lines did not simply appear on a map and they were often drawn in blood. Such was the case in 1813, when Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry defeated the Great Britain’s Royal Navy in the Battle of Lake Erie, thereby ensuring American control of the lake. This significant battle, along with the lasting peace between Britain, Canada and the United States, was commemorated with the Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial, a National Park Service site in Putin-Bay, Ohio. Substantially completed in 1915, the 352-foot structure is the world’s largest Doric column and the third tallest national monument in the United States.

A massive structural preservation effort was planned to restore the monument. The work was contracted to the National Park Service through their Denver Service Center and was funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Key members of the team that is currently fighting the Second Battle of Lake Erie to restore this iconic structure include general contractor The Christman Company, Lansing; architect Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc., Northbrook, IL; stone rehabilitation contractor Booms Stone Co., Redford; waterproofing and sheet metal contractor C.A.S.S. Sheetmetal Specialists, Detroit; MI and scaffolding contractor Universal Builders Supply (UBS), New Rochelle, NY.

Builds Divinely Designed Copper Church Roof

Thanks to work by CASS Sheetmetal of Detroit, MI, the congregation of St. Paul of Tarsus Catholic Church in Clinton Township, MI can worship in a building with a magnificent non leaking new copper roof.

The church’s striking roof, described as a stairway to heaven in one magazine article, is a wavy structure with the curves flowing from the top central roof ridge. The overall design looks like a bell, but the wavy roof also suggests stairs, wings or water. In fact, the church’s design was meant to inspire visions of searching and movement through the life of St. Paul and current parishioners.

The new roof was the answer to a problem of water leaks that had plagued the church for years. The old roof system, installed in the 1980’s allowed rain and snow water to enter the building. The project presented challenges to CASS Sheetmetal and the church. Adding to complications of the specialty sheetmetal work, the church remained open with services every week while the project ran uninterrupted through one of Michigan’s worst winters in recent history. The leaky roof was replaced with the most watertight copper roofing system available. The replacement was double-locked with solder traverse seams!

A Historic National Landmark is Restored!

Working with a daunting schedule, CASS Sheetmetal custom fabricated and installed a shiny new, historically accurate copper cupola on top of the Cranbrook Observatory Tower, a national historic landmark in Bloomfield Hills, MI.

“This was an extreme task that involved much cooperation and effort between our subcontractors and the trades,” said Glenn Parvin, CASS Sheetmetal president. “we kept to a tight schedule.” The company’s challenge was to complete and install the dome in two months working around the community’s summer calendar.

The work was part of a combined project to rebuild the tower’s deteriorating copper cupola and to restore the Ludowici clay tile roof of the Cranbrook Library, both part of the venerable Cranbrook Educational Community. The tower was built in the 1920’s and originally served as a functioning observatory. The years and weather had taken their toll on the structure. Its existing copper cladding, which was simply riveted to the structural steel, had leaked for years..
