I’m normally against sports team themed living spaces, but my exception to this rule is always kids’ and teens’ rooms.
When I design for adults, I try to dig deeper: into their personal style, their color preferences, their history, and the materials that represent who they are beyond a team logo. There’s usually a richer story to tell than simply “I like this team.”
But designing for children is different. Their sense of self is still forming. Who they are, what they love, and how they want to express themselves is constantly shifting. Sometimes their favorite sports team is the biggest piece of inspiration they have and I’m more than happy to bring that passion to life.
What I love most about this room is how versatile the foundation is. If in four years this young man trades baseball for movies, robotics, music, or an entirely new aesthetic, the room can evolve right along with him.
The paint colors are sophisticated enough to age with him, the open shelving can easily be restyled with new mementos, and the furniture pieces are timeless and neutral so they won’t box him into one theme. The sports elements are layered on top, not built in which keeps the design flexible.
We created a solid, elevated base that frames his current passion (baseball, specifically the Mets 🧡💙) while giving him the freedom to grow into whoever he becomes next.
What’s your stance on designing sports themed living spaces?
