A large leap forward for Cook County Isd166 & Community Education as they begin their transformation by celebrating with a groundbreaking to secure a bright future for the students in the Grand Marais area.

This major project balances a 23,364-square-foot addition with a 42,400-square-foot remodel to transform the school's athletic, administrative, and cultural environment. The expansion introduces a secure main entrance and welcome center that anchors the district’s relocated administrative offices, student support services, and upgraded athletic facilities.

The renovation prioritizes community and heritage by moving the Ojibwe classroom and Anishinaabe Academic Center to a prominent location near the main entry. Natural light is a central focus of the remodel, utilizing new skylights and open concepts to flood the cafeteria, media center, and adjacent cultural spaces with shared illumination. Finally, the design enhances safety and inclusivity throughout by integrating universal restrooms, updating staff support areas, and comprehensive special education suites. Last week marked the opening of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Records Building, a facility designed to meet the intent of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) guidelines. The facility will provide a secure and environmentally controlled space to safeguard important tribal records, and documents. This new building also supports the Tribe’s ongoing efforts to re-patriate records that were taken from the reservation over the years, allowing these valuable pieces of their history to finally return where they belong. The opening of this facility brings great excitement and enables the Tribe to continue cultural preservation, historical stewardship, and to honor the stories and legacy of their ancestors for generations to come.

The "Old is Gold" Rule
The most sustainable building is often the one that already exists. "Adaptive Reuse"—the practice of turning old warehouses, factories, big box stores, etc. into modern offices, clinics, daycares, or homes—can save up to 80% of the embodied carbon, which would have been released if a new building were constructed from scratch.

One of the most underrated heroes of sustainable design: Solar Walls

Unlike traditional Photovoltaic (PV) panels that generate electricity, a Solar Wall is primarily designed to heat a building’s ventilation air using the power of the sun. It is a specialized "cladding" system installed on the south-facing side of a building transforming the wall into a massive passive energy generator!

Solar walls offer some of the highest returns on investment in the green building world. Space heating is one of the largest contributors to a building’s carbon footprint. Solar walls can reduce heating loads by up to 20–50%. As cold air enters into a perforated metal skin, the sun heats up the metal skin and air rises up the metal wall. This pre-heated air is then drawn into the building’s HVAC system, drastically reducing the energy needed to heat the air to warm a space.

Fun Fact: An 11 square foot section (roughly 1 square meter) of solar wall can displace more greenhouse gases than several mature trees over the wall’s lifespan!
