I had the pleasure of visiting The Gardens on Spring Creek in Fort Collins recently and was enamored by this plant. It towered above most other perennials and had so much pollinator activity it was mesmerizing. It's so valuable to have late season bloomers for our own enjoyment of our outdoor spaces, and it is important for the ecosystem to have late season nectar and pollen sources available.

Join us over on our blog with a piece from Meg Hearding.

Living in the Wildland Urban Interface, I’ve always been aware of the wildfire risk around my home. As our summers get hotter and drier that risk feels more urgent and I realized I couldn’t take it on alone. Fire doesn’t stop at property lines. One house may be prepared, but if the neighbors aren’t, the whole community is still vulnerable.

Monique DiGorgio of Table to Farm Compost paid the team an early morning visit to share her passion and depth of knowledge for her company's art of turning waste into a treasure for soil health. The act of composting not only produces a rich soil amendment, but it cuts down on greenhouse gases which landfills generate when organic/green waste - like our yard debris and food waste - get added to them. Monique shared the goal of Table to Farm's partnership with the City of Durango, to get easy food composting access to every resident. Yeehaw! Love seeing this good work in our community!

I love these stately perennials. Unless you have a rock garden or a very small space, I am all for growing perennials that are big enough to enjoy from afar, and larger plants to fill a space means fewer individuals that you need to water and care for. Large perennials like Phlomis are especially nice for spaces where the size of a shrub is desired, but won't work due to snow load; perennials don't care how much snow is covering them in the winter, they have no woody branches to break and just come right back up in spring. And I appreciate the rich texture of the spent seed heads of Phlomis, which fits nicely into this month's fall clean up conundrum discussion in the blog.

We're thrilled to announce that we are (finally) making the move to convert our power tools to electric. We will be using solar to charge the battery that will power our new tools. This will be a bit gradual as we will continue using our old gas fueled power tools until they need to be replaced, but there are a couple that are ready for that now.

In my role running a company like Columbine, I often think I should have all the answers, but the fact of the matter is, I don’t. One thing I love about the work we do is that there’s always more to learn. As our understanding grows on things like what it means for a landscape to be firewise, and how to be conscientious stewards of this incredible planet, my approach...

On a recent chilly morning we had the pleasure of a guest speaker to get the team thinking about the difference they can make.

Michael Rendon spoke about an important sustainability issue: trash. In his typical style, Michael was unassuming and relatable. He presented his view on waste diversion, landfills, and recycling and spearheaded some good thought-provoking conversation and brainstorming on how we as individuals can be more conscious in the choices we make.

This little darling has been coming up a lot in conversation lately around here. There are so many fine (literally and figuratively!)-textured native perennials that we love to include in our designs like Bluemat penstemon, Pineleaf penstemon, and phlox, to name a few. Our design style puts high value on foliage and a great way to highlight it is by placing plants with contrasting foliage near each other, so they don't all blend together as a single green mass.
