This Saturday, May 30th, is the last day of my spring plant sales. In case you missed it, my friend Terri McLeod was diagnosed with cancer. While still in the process of seeing specialists, she got appendicitis and had to have emergency surgery. She was in the process of starting up a backyard, native focused, nursery, but is now having to put that off a little while during recovery. She had a plant sale this past Saturday to move her inventory that she won't be able to care for, but had plenty left over. Today I picked up a good amount of plants from her to help sell. 100% of the money from the sale of these select plants will go directly to her.

Elderberry Sambucus canadensis, 1 gallon and 5" pot
Black Cherry, Prunus serotina 2 gallon and 1gallon
Red Cedar Juniperus virginiana 1 gallon
Coreopsis lanceolata 4" pot
Penstemon digitalis 4" pot
Roma tomatoes 4" pot
Cherokee purple tomato 4" pot

Quantities are limited, but orders can be placed in advance. Message/text me to place an order for these plants as they are not included in my online inventory. Preorders must be paid for in advance via Venmo and must be picked up by 4pm Saturday.

I will be open Saturday 9-4, but have time in the afternoon for scheduled pickup this week. 5911 Mount Hermon Church Rd Durham

She also has a GoFundMe set up if you wish to donate there. https://gofund.me/ca9648fca

My inventory will also be available for sale.

Happy World Naked Gardening Day!
In the foreground you'll see our native Tulip Poplar, Liriodendron tulipifera.

It goes by a few other common names such as Yellow Poplar, Canoewood, and Tulip Tree. Canoewood is derived from being preferred by Native Americans to make canoes due to their long straight trunks, light buoyant wood, relatively rot resistant, and easy to carve out.

Native to much of the Eastern United States https://bonap.net/MapGallery/County/Liriodendron%20tulipifera.png, it is the only North American species in the genus, with the only other species found in Asia, Liriodendron chinense.

It belongs to the ancient Magnolia family, Magnoliaceae, which can be easily seen when comparing its large yellow flowers.

Recently this genus has been discovered to be in a category of its own. It's not a "Softwood", nor a "Hardwood", but a tentatively named "Midwood". https://www.cam.ac.uk/research/news/scientists-discover-entirely-new-wood-type-that-could-be-highly-efficient-at-carbon-storage

The large yellow flowers are a preferred pollen and nectar source for many birds and insects, while also being a host plant to over 20 species. https://www.illinoiswildflowers.info/plant_insects/plants/liriodendron_tulipifera.html This includes some of the largest, and THE largest, moth species in North America. This includes the Tulip Tree Silkmoth https://www.bugguide.net/node/view/482/bgimage , Promethea Silkmoth https://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/species/Callosamia-promethea , and the Tulip Tree Beauty https://www.bugguide.net/node/view/564

Growing best in full sun, loamy and acidic soils with various soil compositions, it will quickly grow at a rate of 3-5 feet per year. Being one of the largest trees in North America, it can easily reach 100' with some records of it getting to 200' tall and 10' diameter. So, it's best grown in areas where it has plenty of room to grow.

Now blooming in the nursery!

First we have Virginia Sweetspire, Itea virginica. This shade loving shrub grows 4-8' tall. Its long white racemes can be up to 6" long and are very fragrant. Add this to your pollinator garden to bring in butterflies and feed bees! Song birds will also feed on the seeds in the fall.

Next up we have False Indigo, Amorpha fruticosa. Growing best in full sun and moist soils, it can reach up to 15' tall and just as wide. Its large purple blooms are highlighted by golden pollen. This is my native plant replacement for the invasive butterfly bush due to its similar size, flower, and attractiveness to pollinators. It's also a host plant to many species including the Silver-spotted Skipper, Gray hairstreak, and Hoary edge skipper.

You can find these beautiful plants and more on Saturdays 9-4. 5911 Mount Hermon Church Rd Durham
