Self-developed in 2012, Durham Central Park Cohousing became a part of a quickly changing downtown, an area that would soon be peppered with balconies. We aimed for a size generous enough for outdoorsy folks and skilled gardeners. Balconies are a vital feature of the Coho building.

Balconies can be tricky; these things can be beneficial spaces, but sometimes in urban situations they appear underutilized. We spend a lot of time studying balconies because we hope they’ll bring enduring usefulness and pleasure. Do you have a balcony where you live? Do you enjoy it? We’ll be sharing some of our past takes on balconies this month.

Upon seeing a young palm tree at this backyard renovation the builder exclaimed, “I get it, it’s Durham in front, Malibu in back. We are excited to see this space coming together.
