WHICH WOULD YOU CHOOSE? — CENTURY HOUSE CHALLENGE 💪

Remember the Century House Challenge?

The homeowners asked us to explore what this 100-year-old Northwoods home could become — larger bedrooms, a second bathroom, dedicated laundry, better kitchen and dining space, and improved flow.

But there was one big question:

Could we make the existing footprint work, or would a modest addition make more sense?

We developed five different layout concepts — some staying completely within the existing footprint, others rethinking the kitchen and fireplace, and one exploring a modest addition.

Now I want to know: which would YOU choose?

Option A, A2, B, C or D?

The homeowners have already narrowed it down to three. 😉 Those three are now being revised for contractor conversations and preliminary pricing.

After working through the existing footprint, Timber & Bay Design presented the homeowners with four different space-planning options — each solving the same wish list a little differently.

Now comes the hard part: deciding which direction feels most like home.

Once they choose, We'll share the options and walk through the thinking behind them.

🔍YOUR FLOOR PLAN MAY BE LYING TO YOU.

A floor plan can tell you if everything fits. But it doesn't always tell you how the space will feel.

That's where 3D becomes such a useful part of remodel planning.

At Timber & Bay we start our space planning in 2D with a floor plan to work out the layout first - then move to 3D to look at things that can be much harder to understand on paper:

• How the kitchen and living room connect
• What you’ll see as you move through the house
• Whether circulation areas feel comfortable
• How windows affect the space
• Where your eye is naturally drawn
• And even what you don’t want in a sightline

Once layout is working, 3D lets us virtually stand in the room and experience those decisions before construction begins.

And that's really the goal: not just creating a floor plan that works on paper, but helping homeowners understand the space they are about to build.

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED. 💪🌲

Century House Challenge

This one is for a couple getting ready to retire to the Northwoods and make this house their home for the years ahead.

The challenge? Part of the house is 100 years old, space is limited, and the wish list is not. 😉

Another bathroom. Laundry brought up from the basement. Larger bedrooms. A bigger kitchen. Possibly relocating the basement stairs to reclaim family-room space — all while planning ahead for a future garage.

Can we make the existing footprint work harder, or does an addition make more sense?

This is what space planning is all about — finding the best way to make an existing home work for the next chapter of life.

🏡 THIS or THAT?

Decision fatigue is real!!!

Sometimes neither choice is wrong — but after staring at the same two options over and over, it gets harder and harder to decide.

Remodeling comes with a LOT of decisions. At Timber & Bay Design, I help homeowners work through those choices, look at how each one fits into the bigger picture, and keep the project moving forward with confidence.

In this case, both options work — but each gives the exterior a slightly different look.

Planning & Prep — Even Dogs Do It! 😂

The minute we start cooking, Bailey takes her position under the table.

Good planning and preparation = positioning yourself for success.

Turns out, remodeling isn’t all that different.

Thinking through the layout, anticipating challenges, and making decisions before construction begins can make all the difference once the work starts.

Of course, Bailey measures success by whether or not something hits the floor. 🐾😂

Which layout will they choose? 👀

I’ve been working through multiple possibilities for this remodel, and the client presentation is coming up next.

Different layouts. Different tradeoffs. Different ways to make the home work better for how they actually live.

This is one of my favorite parts of the process — taking all the ideas, constraints and possibilities and narrowing them down to the options that make the most sense.

Now I get to present them and see which direction they love.
