Tip of the Month - Give Everyone a Place to Land
A mudroom or coat closet can get out of control quickly because a lot needs to happen in a relatively small space. Before you add more storage, think about who uses the space, what they bring through the door, and where those things should land.
Start with the people.
Give each family member a hook, basket, cubby, or defined area for the things they use every day.
Limit what lives there.
Keep current-season coats, shoes, and gear accessible. Move off-season and occasional-use items somewhere else.
Make everyday items easy to put away.
If kids can’t reach the hooks or putting away shoes requires too many steps, the system probably won’t last. Keep it simple.
Leave a little breathing room.
Don’t fill every hook, shelf, and basket. Your system needs room for the things that naturally come and go throughout the week.
Take a look at what lands inside your door tonight. If you can identify where the breakdown is happening, you already know where to start. And if you need help turning that plan into a functional system, our organizing team can help you take it from there.
