This crazy warm weather has been pushing all of the spring bloomers to have their day in the sun at the same time and this is a match I have never seen work so well before: Helleborus ‘Dark & Handsome’ intertwining its heavy boughs with the light and bright Mertensia virginica (VA Bluebells). A very happy accident!

Spent a gorgeous fall morning touring the gardens at Morven Estate last weekend courtesy of Piedmont Landscape Association. Over 20 years in Charlottesville and I’ve never been through the gates of this historic property. The highlight for me was the Japanese Garden that was installed during the Kluge era by a landscaping firm that flew in from Japan and spent three years carefully constructing a cascading natural waterfall out of boulders and stones and an intricate network of pathways. There was a raking meditation taking place while we were there so we got to enjoy the garden in complete silence other than the sound of the raking of leaves. It was glorious!! I highly recommend going if you should ever get the opportunity.

An enticing view on the last hot day of summer before the weather broke! Visiting with great clients and checking in on the progress of this two year old installation.

It’s been a really good season for the home gardens despite the lack of rain! Established plants (those that have been in the ground for at least one year) manage drought conditions much better than newly installed plants. Even still, I did hand water some of the perennials that were planted last year and of course the Mophead Hydrangeas which are water hogs and wilt easily in hot weather.

Technically the first day of spring, or the vernal equinox, doesn’t start until 11:06 tonight but there were many bright and shiny signs of the coming season today. Did you know the term equinox is derived from the Latin words aequus and nox, or equal night? Here’s to longer days and more time spent enjoying this beautiful world that surrounds us!

This Iris took a long and winding road to find it’s way to my garden after my father took a few rhizomes from his mothers Rhode Island garden in the late 90’s and rooted them into his own garden in Northern VA. After they got established there, my sister took a few to start in her garden and then one spring day a few years later, I took a division from her and planted it in my garden. Now at a new house but the Irises came with me and are looking more gorgeous than ever!
