We cleaned and repopulated the observation hive this afternoon. And just like everything with bees, it was not as straightforward as we anticipated.

The colony had been struggling all spring, no brood sighted, very low population. We put a new queen in last week and still nothing seemed to be happening. So, today's plan was to open it up and see what was going on in there. Turns out, pretty much nothing was going on in there.

We saw the new queen, but no signs of any eggs being laid yet. No worries, we figured we'd just put this tiny colony into a nuc box and put a swarm we captured a couple weeks ago into this hive and be done.

We started moving the new bees and and saw the queen just kinda sitting on the bottom of the box they'd been in. Something looked "off," though the only way I can describe it is that she looked drunk. Looking back, this swarm was captured off the ground, which is weird . Maybe she was injured already. I don't know. But fine. We'll just keep the old Queen in there and leave this injured one in the nuc box with some friends and keep an eye on her...an awesome plan except then we couldn't find the first queen. No idea where she went.

So, maybe there are two queens in there now. Maybe there's just one. Maybe one flew off and the other one is dead and there are no queens in there.

Guess we'll see what happens.

Hey EA gardeners! Did you know we have our very own Garden Walk? You can be part of this beautiful annual event by welcoming visitors to your space in July. Your garden doesn't need to look like a spread in Martha Stewart's magazine. Is there a water feature you're particularly proud of? A native plant garden full of pollinators? A color-themed annual display? If it brings you joy, please consider sharing your space and help inspire other area gardeners.
