Attempting a rainbow theme with June blooms. These are scattered at multiple sites, so they're not actually grouped in one location. Might try another variation using annuals.

Today's bloom: Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea). Despite the heat, these keep pushing out color!

Here's an interesting bloomer.

Itoh Peony (Paeonia lactiflora x suffruticosa Bartzella)

We were were looking for a yellow blooming Peony as a memorial for a friend who had passed away from cancer a few years ago. She always had yellow Peonies in her yard. We thought it would be fitting to plant one; especially since it would bloom around the time of her passing.

The first few blooms had streaks of yellow but were mostly pink. Then the next blooms (first picture) were all pink. Finally, today's bloom was Yellow! As our friend would have said, "Oh My Garsh!" I think she would have approved of our "surprise" Peony...

The third picture is the tag that came with the plant. If you want a touch of unexpected in your garden, this Peony was purchased at Rockelman's Nursery in York.

So have you ever found foamy gobs on your plants and wondered if someone's been hawking loogies in your yard? Most likely it's a Spittle Bug! The nymph and adults filter a lot of moisture from the plant to get nutrients. In turn the moisture turns into bubbles where the bugs can hide from predators. Note: the black beads in the second picture were made by some kind of caterpillar. The bugs in this patch of foam are most likely the nymph stage of Meadow Spittlebug (Philaenus spumaria). Another common name is "Cuckoo-spit." And, no, I'm not making that up.

Saw this on the underside of Holly leaves. These are Florida Wax Scale insects. They suck the sap out of the leaves. The sap can attract sooty mold fungus (somewhat visible in lower part of picture). If you notice something like black crud (sooty mold) on the top side of the leaves, check the underside for these. Depending on what life stage you find, they can be hard to treat. If the infestation is light, cut off the affected leaves and bag them up for trash.

🤬 Weeds 🌱🌱🌱

Persian Speedwell (Veronica persica)
Circled in red--Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris)
Circled in yellow--Lamb's Quarters (Chenopodium album)
Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale)--Broad Leaf plant in background is Burdock (Arctium lappa)
Purple Deadnettle (Lamium purpureum)
Shepherd's Purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris)

The good news is that each of these plants have edible parts and are ready to "harvest" before most vegetables are ready. They tend to spread rapidly by seed though, so harvest or eliminate well before or as soon as they flower.
