Common milkweed is in bloom. Monarchs have been making their way north and the first arrivals to the Northeast have been sighted in just the last several days! If you enjoy the milkweed blooms go ahead and cut off a few stalks to appreciate - just check for any possible eggs before cuttingšŸ˜ monarch catepillars seem to appreciate the younger tender stalks so trimming some back throughout the season can be helpful.

Out planting acorns in some air prune beds today. Look at this double radicle! So great to meet and connect with fellow conservationists and native plant people this past season. This year will be lots of growing! Thanks to all who shared and helped me source a lot of local eco type seeds for this season. I hope to bring you some great selections soon while a lot of the woodies will be given out and planted public areas.

Time to wake up from our winter rest! Hope you enjoyed a peaceful season. I have been balancing rest and recharging with designing garden plans, sowing many native species, spending time outdoors (birds!), experimenting with new techniques and continuing to learn and research.

Colorful oaks, baby trees and some wintergreen! I can’t move quietly in the woods this time of year with the leaf litter crunching but I think that invites an extra sense of playfulness while exploring.

Trying to make decisions on 1,000 ideas in my home landscape when I spot this little surprise gift hiding in the lawn. A young juniper has survived some mowing, no idea how long it has been there. I had been thinking about planting some form of eastern red cedar especially knowing how much the birds love the cones. I guess I took too long to put something in so nature is taking care of it for me.

Gardening for wildlife and ecological design is more than taking inspiration from wild spaces -it is working with nature and welcoming the surprises that will often guide you and develop your landscape.
