Servicing a Deere riding mower this week for a no-start situation. Noticed the telltale sign of rodent infestation in the motor by a single dangling string hanging out of the side of motor near spark plug. I proceeded to diagnose and replace the defective part and then moved on to investigate the suspected squatter situation. The mice set up house on top of one cylinder and there was absolutely zero air flow through the fins of that cylinder head, which is a recipe for a nice repair bill of about 700.00. Lucky for my customer, we caught it before there was damage to the cylinder head... After a thorough cleaning and testing, my customer is mowing grass once again. Especially on V-Twin riding mower engines, please pay special attention to any debris you see hanging out the small openings on edge of heat shields on riding mower engines. Check them frequently.
